Truck Details

Hey all, I was re-reading my glove box sticker the other day and had a few questions regarding the combination I have.

Engine: 292 L6
Tranny: 4speed manual
Posi rear end
Heavy Duty Coils front and rear
Lower trim molding


Questions: Is the 292 4spd a good combo. What can I do with it? Should I keep the heavy duty coils or can I put lowering coils in. Why would the truck only have lower trim molding?


Any help is appreciated.

The upper trim only came on CSTs and Deluxe 2-tones:accent color on top & between upper/lower mouldings.
It`s up to you on the coils.You certainly can use drop coils or any coil for 1/2t or 3/4t trucks.
The 292 was the optional 6cyl.A great torquey motor,but not so economical for a 6.There`s speed equipment available and a warmed over 292 will drop a few jaws.I`d like on in my shortbed 4wd with a manual tranny.

Okay, I know I am keeping this 292 but can't seem to find many aftermarket parts for it.

Actually, the upper trim could be had alone as a single option, my 60 GMC was optioned as such when it was new... but long gone by the time I got it.

Wouldn't this truck have also typically been equipped with a 4.10 rear end?

There's some pretty nice equipment available for the 292. Get a copy of "Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual" by Leo Santucci. A lot of good info there. Here's a couple of pics of a mild 292.

If your trans is the heavy-duty, rock-crushing 4spd with the granny gear, you might want to put in an automatic, or a T5. There's some modification, and nuisance factor, but it's worth it.

The 292 can be souped up. The cool factor is the best part. Your not gonna make ground pounding BBC power, but throw on a aluminum intake, headers, 4bbl. and a high lift cam, that motor will come to life.

if you are interested in souping up a 292, you should buy the Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual mentioned above. It is a great book with tons of info.

I can't remember if that'd be a 3.07 or a 3.73 rear with that combo... assuming it is a half ton, the 4.10 would only be standard with an overdrive tranny.

Thanks Guys, this is some great information. I will pickup that information book forsure. I am not sure what gears my rear end is at all actually. It is a half ton.
