Angry Had to fire another painter today

My dad and I hired another guy to paint my truck back in October. In five months all we got out of him was about two days worth of work. The most aggravating part was every time I talked to him he said he would have the cab done in a week. We were like Yeah Right, you've hardly touched it in four months but you're gonna have it done in a week. So today My dad, brother, a friend and I went and picked it up from him.

We're in a search for new painters. We found a real nice outfit here in town called Precision Rod & Custom. They have a very nice setup. All they do is restorations, absolutely no collision or insurance work. It will be more expensive if we let these guys do it, but you get what you pay for. They had four cars in there they had painted when we went to talk to them last week, and you could shave in these things they're so slick. The only problem I have with going with these guys is the truck will be too nice to drive and I won't have a trailer queen. We'll just see what happens when they look at the truck next week and give us a price.

Sorry, just had to rant.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

Hmmm.... tough call. Glad to see you fired the old company, I hate shops who treat customers like that. See if you can get it across to the new shop that you want a very nice paint job but don't want to pay a huge premium for a PERFECT paint job. If its a driver truck and you expect it to get its share of normal wear and tear, then get a paint job for it.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

Same thing just happened to my neighbor. He took his '65 F-100 to a guy in November, and picked up his unpainted truck a couple days ago. Supposedly the guy got kicked out of his building because he wasn't supposed to be painting there. Now my neighbor is wondering if my dad and I can let the guy paint it in our workshop. In order for that to happen he is going to have to paint my truck for next to nothing.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

I share your frustration. Painters have got to be the most unreliable people in the world. This one idiot who is supposed to be painting my cab has had it forever. Every time I call him, he says it will be " 2 more weeks " I got the bed back from him finally, and a lot of it needs to be redone. It has runs, sanding scratches showing through, etc. I guess I'll end up just picking it up and trying to find somebody else to do it. If anybody knows a good DEPENDABLE painter in the Dallas/Ft Worth area who is reasonable, please let me know.

Consider yourself lucky. I have heard stories of guys that take thier ride to a paint shop only to have half the stuff stolen and sold off never to be seen again....

My truck was in the shop for years, the shop belonged to a family friend. I picked up my truck and have never talked to the family friend ever again.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

I was in the Marines in North Carolina and a friend of mine wrecked my camaro. I took it to a shop and he kept putting off fixing it. So finally I got orders to transfer and demanded he get it fixed, it had already been two months! Well a week later I went to go get it and he still hadn't gotten it done so I asked him what the problem was. He said he needed the cash up front!!! Can you believe that?! I told him that no one does business that way but if he had told me I would have paid him because I really needed my car. Well when I got my car back it looked like he let a 3rd grade class of kids with ADHD (no offense) work on it, orange peel, runs, dull paint, etc. I confronted him about it and he said "bring it back in two to three weeks and I'll wet sand it and buff it for you. What a jerk, I was being transfered the following week and he knew it!

God, that felt good to get off my chest.

If you have a garage or one you can use, paint it yourself....It's easy and will save you money.

I am painting my own truck in my garage, just the backsides and inside of the cab so far, but I pleased with the results. Its not hard at all, don't let the "painters" make you think its some kind of dark art. In my experience, albeit limited, new quality paint products are hard to screw up if you just take your time and do it right. I am shooting single stage PPG Concept line of paint.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

The guy I got my 69 from was sitting at a body shop where I had to get it from when I bought it. It sat there for 5 years to have a box side put on & the box painted. I think thats part of the reason he sold it to me, he was tired of waiting & just gave up on it...

I would love to be able to paint it myself but I don't have a place to do it. I don't know how to do any bodywork to fix the few problems it has. Also, the paint I'm using has ALOT of pearl in it and every painter I've talked to says you have to paint all the body panels at the same time or they won't match. We'll get something worked out. It may just take a little more time than we expected.

Angry Re: Had to fire another painter today

I had mine painted by a guy at work - he works nights and has a full-scale shop during the day - he had the truck for a year, and that was with me stopping by 2-3 times a week. He still screwed it up and I have paint cracking all over the place.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

I guess I do not understand....if it was not done in the time specified in the contract I would deduct some dollars each day until it was done. For each day they precede the deadline...I would incent them with dollars.

Say...$10 penalty for each day past the deadline.
and $50 bonus for each day preceding the deadline.

I think you have it real quick.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

Might sound funny to you guys, but I had my 79 Camaro painted at Earl Sheibs here in Norfolk, Virginia. It was Viper Red. When I went to pick it up, it had a finger print on the hood. He told me to bring it back and he would make it right. He said the paint had to cure for ten days. I took it back, and when I got it three days later it was awesome. Now I am not talking the 250 job. I paid 800 and got five coats of clear over the Viper Red. Now that I have had to pull the dents out of it from a tree, yes a tree falling on it during a hurricane, I will not hesitate to take it back to them. I am going to get them to paint my 71 Mach1 also. My two cents, Kerry

Re: Had to fire another painter today

My brother took his truck to have it painted and this guy has had the truck since JUNE '03?????????????????????????????????????

My brother paid him up front(still wondering why) and he came pretty highly recommended. The guy just makes excuses and says some something always comes up. My brother just got shipped off to iraq and will be back in 90 days. When we go to pick it up it will be UGLY if it's not ready.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

The pearl should be a mid coat. Kind of a 3 stage paint - base/pearl/clear. I've been painting on the side since high school ('88) and while I won't say it's "easy", if you take some advice from the professionals, read up on it, and take your time, you can do a job that you can be proud of. If you just jump in with a grinder, a gallon of bondo, some primer and a paint gun, you're liable to make such a mess that no one will want to come behind you and fix it. Take your time and approach it the right way. Think about it, you wouldn't tear down an engine and attempt to rebuild it without reading up on how to do it right, would you? To any of you guys that are hesitant to do your own work, I say take a shot at it if you're got the facilities and the tools. I love it when someone asks "where'd you get your car painted" and I say "I did it" .......Jerry

I fired my painter last month also. When he could not give me a price, I told him that's all I needed to know.

68stepbed there are some good painters in Maryville.

Re: Had to fire another painter today

I think I know the problem..Has to be from snorting the paint fumes.. Same here "Hmmm next week should be done"..two weeks go by.."ahh yeah I'm painting it this coming Saturday"...week later.."I had something come up but I need to get this finished don't I yeah well should be done by this weekend"...one more week...I'm afraid to go by there.. And I always heard the squeeky wheel gets the oil first..
