14 month K10 Build thread!

I scanned some of my build pics today! I guess I have posted a couple pics of what it looks like now, so I thought I would share some of the earlier ones. I found the Truck Trader ad the truck was in as well. The ad came out 3/11/97 and I bought the truck two days later.

A couple weeks after this I sold my Jeep CJ with intentions of spending the cash on painting my K10. I dropped it off at the shop with high hopes of riding pretty in short order. Well about a week goes by and I get a call "Come get this piece of $h!T it ain't worth fixin!" It turns out that there isn't a good panel on the truck aside from the hood and the roof!

Rocker panels and cab corners are easy enough to come up with as well as cab floor supports. Patches are made for the floor and the doors are skinned since replacements can't be found.

Another complete truck is bought just for it's bedsides.

The center of one floor (which was straight but rusted around the edges) was welded to the edges of another floor (which was rust free but a tad wavy).

Once the beds panels were satisfactory they were painted everywhere they were to be bolted together. Once the paint dried a sealant/caulk(?) was applied to the panels before they were bolted together.

Re: 14 month K10 Build thread!

Things are starting to come together.

I think they got it pretty straight.

We added the lift and then some bigger rubber.

As she looked right after leaving the shop 14mos and close to $10K later.

And of course it still wasn't done. The engine had to come out a couple years later for a rebuild. That's my engine builder and bud member 71see10 in the pic.

I'm sure I've skipped a lot of stuff and these pics aren't the best but you get the general idea. And if you're just now joining us this is what it looks like now.

This hobby has come a long way in the last 10 years! Let's hope it continues to improve!

Thanks, As far as total hours go.....well. Here's a story that I can relate this to. I work with a fella who lost his balance and fileted his arm on a piece of raw metal. He was losing a lot of blood and had to be airlifted to the hospital. Emergency surgery was done to get him put back in one piece. When he woke up in the recovery room and asked the doctor how many stitches were in his arm he was told "we don't count stitches here". I guess what I'm saying is after a certain point you can't keep up with it.

I hear that. I kept track of hours for awhile on my resto, but then I stopped counting the non-productive hours like when I couldn't find a part in my garage that I knew I had. After that I just counted the "good" hours, then I decided that was just pointless, so I quit counting all together.

Great truck See Ten, love the stance and the wheel/tire setup.

So did it have some really old bodywork before, or was it the victim of a bad resto or what?

I found the truck in sandy south Georgia. The truck had one repaint on it and I could see it was going to need rockers and that there were some bubbles behind the front tires. The truck was victim to the old school of thought. You know that I'll just sand over these rust bubbles and skim over em with some filler. If I knew about trucks then what I know now I might not of bought it. The shop pics may not look like it but the old guy who did the metal work was pretty nit picky and wanted things leaving his shop to be "right". I have one of his old business cards which reads " Not the cheapest, just the best!". And I say "Old" guy respectfully. He was born in 1923 and had worked on automobiles his entire life. His son actually did most of the disassembly and prep/paint. At one point the guy had walking pneumonia and was bedridden for a couple weeks. I thought the guy was going to die before I got my truck back. His shop had four rooms and at this point you could look at any wall and see part of my truck hanging there. I REALLY never thought I would see it run again. I can also understand how people get burnt out on these projects and bail out when they're half done.

Re: 14 month K10 Build thread!

I have really enjoyed the pics and story of your truck!! I have one at the body shop that I started with my son about 2 years ago, we worked hard that first summer and through the winter, then not as dedicated last summer; but got it ready to have the final sanding and paint done. The bodyman said he was ready for it and we took it to him on June 25 of 06....he has one front fender finished, thats it nothing more in 9 months...not sure if it will ever be finished either....your story gives me some hope!!! Our goal was to have it finished for my son's senior pictures, that will be this summer, not very optimistic about that happening.

Looks great! Do you happen to remember just what the colors are? That is just the look I want for project Low Buck. Is it single or two stage?
Thanks

Re: 14 month K10 Build thread!

The colors on the build sheet are Dark Green and White. I could probably hunt around and find the paint code for you if you want it. The paint is single stage. That is probably the only thing I would change if I had it done again. I have had older vehicles painted before and the painter would cross the code over to a clear 2 stage version. I didn't specify I wanted it done 2 stage so they went back with single stage. It looks alright when it's sitting by itself, but when you park it next to something that has multiple coats of clear and has been watersanded, it doesn't look so hot. I can't complain, the paint is nearly 9 years old and is still holding up.
