1987 Fuel Injection

How integrated were the fuel injection setups in these trucks ?

I already have an engine that runs great with it's carburetor and intake. It would cost too much to make the TBI setup produce the same amount of power so I do not want to deal with it.

Is the wiring harness for the fuel injection easily removable ?

What is the difference in the fuel system as far as the pump (mechanical? electrical?) and is there a return line ?

As far as i know they'er pretty interchangable as as it with a couple of years.

Actually a tbi setup will give you ore power and better response in the petal. It may also help in fuel economy.

Youll have to get a truck with tbi and take it computer and all. I removed every thing tbi from my jimmy and made it carb. setup If your good with ur hands and make every thing before removing and remember to takes picture i dont see why it would be to hard to change over.

The pump is electrical its in the tank ull run wires to that but ull get that from the donor truck as well. IM Not positive on a return line dont quite remember that hopefully someone chims in for that one. All the fuel line are metal cant use rubber on that set up or at least mine didnt.

Hope this helps

Re: 1987 Fuel Injection

What kind of fuel pressure do the in tank pump(s) put out ? Can I use a regulator to knock it down to 6-8PSI for a carb ?

In a dual tank truck, I'm assuming there's 2 pumps and they get switched when you switch from left to right ?

Re: 1987 Fuel Injection

yes tow pumps when u have two tanks.

For the psi rating for electric pumps in a tank might be to much im to positive of it psi but for a stock engine and carbarated.

OPINION: I personally like the mecanical pump there cheaper easy to fix if they go bad and unless ur putting in a tbi or fuelinjected system they'll do the job for any carbarator. My chevelles engine is bored .30 and had 69 covetter heads with a high cam. With a high out put edelbrock mechanical pump it does the job. Just thought id put my 2 cents in

Re: 1987 Fuel Injection

TBI puts out 12 - 15 PSI. You can easily put a regulator between the supply and return lines to drop it down to carb pressures. Actually a really nice option, esspecially if your carb's fuel bowl is always empty. Turn the truck on, let the pump run for a few moments to fill the fuel bowl, then hit the key. Should fire pretty much immediate. Just hook the fuel pump up with a relay that is controlled by an ignition / crank power source, and the fuel pump will run as long as your truck's key is in the on position. Won't matter if your engine isn't running, as the regulator will return excess fuel back to the tank.

Shouldn't need to worry about baffles in your fuel tanks either, as the carb's fuel bowls will keep the engine running even if the fuel pump sends some air down the line.
