20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
Hey guys -
My 84 swb is below. I'm looking for 20's in the front and 20's or 22's in the back. I forget how much I lowered my truck (6 years ago...), but I measured the distance from the cement to the trim on the outer lip of the fender as 27.5" in the back and 27" in the front. I don't want to run rubber band tires. Instead, I'd like to know some wheel backspacing that has worked out to tuck the wheels up inside. And I don't mind cutting some of the inner fender lip. Some of you guys are tucking 20" or way bigger wheels on trucks that are lower than mine. What kinds of wheel backspacing and tire combos have worked out? Also, my truck has a 383 with 3.42 gears. It has 10" wide tires now and doesn't hook up the best. This thing isn't fast, but it has some torque, and I don't want a skinny little tire that just spins... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
20x8.5 up front w/5" back spacing & a 255-40/20.
20x10 on the back w/5" back spacing & a 295-40/20. 22's will start getting you into that 'rubberband' territory you mentioned unless you run a 31/32" tall tire ( a 305-40/22 is 31.6" tall). The 20" sizes I listed are 28 & 29" tall respectively....

SCOTI -
Thanks for the reply. That's exactly the info I'm looking for!! The foose nitrous wheels come in 20x10's, but other than that I'm having a hard time finding 20x10's. Who makes your wheels? Any other brands that you remember offering that size? P.S. - your truck looks sweet man!

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
I'm wondering also, can you put 20x10s all the way around? and can you run all same size tires with out it looking funny,
right now I'm running 17x9 with 275/40r17 on all 4 corners

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
Thanks for the compliments guys. Now you have me wondering if I should just stick with the old faithful Cragars...
I bought the truck 6 years ago from the original owner. He put the Cragars on the day he rolled it off the show room in 84. They're still alive and kickin! I wish Cragar made 20x10's to update my 15x10's.

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
Coys makes a 20x8.5 & 20x10 & they're available in grey, chrome, & polished finishes. Google 'Coy's Wheels'. They are similar to 5-spoke Cragars.

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
By the measurements you provided, sounds like you got 'bout a 4/6 drop. (But, it looks like the pic was taken before the drop.)
BTW, nice looking truck. Quote:
Quite a few wheel manufactures make 20x10s (and 20x9.5s). Here's a few quality ones: American Racing (http://americanracing.com/wheels/det...shed§ion=V) Billet Specialties (http://www.billetspecialties.com/subcategory.asp?cid=16) Intro Wheels (http://introwheels.com/) ... just to name a few. I did a quick hack of your truck with 20" cragars.

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
WELCOME slick truck you got there. Cragar does make the S/S aluminum wheel in 20x8.5 but I'm sure it fits our year trucks. I'm thinking the bolt pattern is different.

Thanks for the chop job. You make a great case for the Cragars. I came across these alba wheels last night. They're available in the sizes I'd like. What do you guys think?

Since you asked. . ..... They're not for me; too busy. I actually like those photoshopped 20" S/S wheels.

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
I checked out the coy's, and I love the look. I can't tell from the pic, are yours chrome or polished? Did you have to pay what they're listed on the website?
Also, if you have time to take more pics, would you mind getting some from behind?

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
personally i feel anything over a 16" rim maybe cutting it close with a 17" rim makes these swb square bodies look like skates. i'd stick between 15" - 17".

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
i LOVE the look of PCMCOBRA's truck. cragars are a bit dated but will always have style. TTII's are over used, and the pic you showed of the 20's, i agree, a little too much going on for a truck in this body style... JMO.
nice truck by the way!!

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
Thanks to all you guys that took the time to give your opinions and lend your photoshop skills!
I like the look of the TTII's and Cragars and Coy's, don't get me wrong. The only hold back I have is that there are already quite a few guys with this look. I'd like to find something a little different. But at the same time, I don't want to screw up and waste $2,000 for tires and wheels that look ghetto or just don't fit the truck. The saga continues... Keep the opinions/ideas coming my way!

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
I believe pcmcobra has polished Coys.
The popular design that TTIIs, Cragars and others have a timeless style. Many of the 'custom' designs of some newer wheels may not have such a lasting impression and become outdated. Here's a black center treatment on Coy's that's different and not quite as popular:

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
The dark spokes on the wheels in that pic accents the truck nicely.

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
Boxrodz -
Thanks for taking care of me with the chops!! Now I'm beginning to second guess myself. I like the "busy" wheels that no one else likes, but the black spokes look DANG good too! I still don't know what I want to do, but there's one thing I do know - my girflriend is sure getting tired of me talking about wheels. If I keep this up, she might buy me a set just to get me to shut up...

Re: 20" or 22" wheel sizing tips
No problem.
Now for something completely different... A black chrome treatment on the rat tails of 20" billets... (a little busier) Mo' fuel for the fire.
