anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
Just curious if anyone has bought the after market chrome bumpers for our trucks, and how they have held up.... I have bought bumpers in the past for my old S10 and they would always rust over the first winter, or start to pit and get kinda green.... hows the quality on the ones for the 67-72's ?

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
Pretty much the same , i have 'em on my 68 , but it only goes to the drag strip and then back to the shop , no problem . I'm not too sure any of the modern chrome is worth a crap , the front bumper on my 05 Ram rusts bad in the winter , gotta take the sos pad to it in the spring . The only good thing about the aftermarket bumpers is there cheap , like $110 ea aprox .
Just my .02 ................................................. 409

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
I had one on the back of my 78 and it ended up with some rust spots on it. The truck is was a daily driver and never garaged. I washed the truck pretty regularly but with the paint and body in the shape it was, it didn't get washed as much as a nice paint job would have. I used polishing compound a few times to take off the rust but it kept coming back. I'm sure if I had kept after it with polish and kept the dirt off it, it may have lasted better but when given a regular wash schedule, it just didn't last.
On the front though, I had what appeared to be the original bumper. While the shine was a bit dull from age and needed a good polishing, it never got a spot of rust on it. The aftermarket one are good if you keep after them. Anyone know of some kind of polish or treatment that could be applied that will help protect the chrome better in a daily driven situation? |

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
I bought 1, 2 years ago for my 70. i was worried about it rusting in the winter out here, cause the back was not chrome. I sanded down the back and painted it then used bed liner on the back. It has not rusted yet and the chrome on the front is still like new, just a few dead bugs on it.[ BOUGHT FROM LMC TRUCK]

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
I have a repop front bumper on the front of the 71 for 6 years now.
The backside has surface rust, the chrome is still good. I don't baby either the bumper or the truck and it still looks good for a driver. |

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
Paint the backside and just take care of it. Wash it and put a good polish on it such as Mothers, this will help keep it clean and rust free. I have been doing it for years.

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
Some of the vendors carry a bumper with a 5 year warranty. That's almost as good as a new car warranty.

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
The front bumper I bought from GMCPauls has the 5 year warranty. I just cleaned it up today before installing. Was gonna paint the back, but just cleaned it up and put a good coat of Mothers chrome polish on both sides.

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
I have one of those Mopac chrome rear sport bumpers sitting in the garage and waiting to go on my truck when we get rid of this snow. After reading this thread I'm going to take my bumper to the powder coaters and have the backside powdercoated black before I install it and I hope that will keep the rust away..

Re: anyone ever buy aftermarket chrome bumpers
I picked up front and rear from The Truck Shop at the Portland swap meet a good 4 - 5 years ago. Truck sits outside most of the time but we don't get much snow and they never salt the roads here. Like most said, surface rust on the back side abd the front is as shiny as ever. I'm happy with them.
