16 Ounces of Fury!!!

Well, I did something tonight that I am rather proud of. Jtrux stopped by the house tonight and did his best to get my lazy *$s off the couch, after about 30 minutes I was awake and ready to do something. We decided to tear into the raised steering arm that I ordered the other day. I have changed these before and usually it takes the better part of a day to remove the cones and get the old arm off. After about 30 minutes of removing the front tire, unbolting suspension parts and coating everything with a good dose of P.B. Blaster, we were ready to take a stab at removing the cones. This is the amazing part. It only took about 20 minutes of banging with my MANSIZED 16oz claw hammer, and POOF…the old arm was off. I was shocked that I got it off so easily. Jtrux was no help at all, of course. After that, we put on the new part, bolted everything back up, greased the steering joints, and took her around the block. The new arm made a lot of difference in the way the truck behaves in the parking lot atmosphere. I couldn’t be happier with our 1 hour of work!

VT – Yeah, the original setup was strained pretty good with that amount of angle. Surprisingly, all of the steering joints are pretty tight at the moment, especially after I greased them. I will eventually change all of it, but at this point I have a lot of other things to take care of. If it ain’t broke…

Special-K – You said it! I have been dreading this for a while now. I know it needed to be done, but I have had such bad luck in the past that I was kinda avoiding it. I guess I am now the king of the “LFH”. There is a downside to this. I don’t have an excuse to buy any more tools at the moment

J – Honestly I was pretty worried about that too. Glad it didn’t happen! I watched my brother hit himself between the eyes with a 2lb a couple of years ago when he "missed" while hitting up on a 4wheeler part. Gotta be careful!

Where did you get the arm at and how much was it?

Its a ProComp made part, but I got it from Summit. I think it was $62.95 plus a couple of bucks for their "handling" fee. I also got a new set of Polyurethane bushings for the front lift springs. I guess that is the next project.

It's his way of converting it to a 2wd.

D@mn! you beat me to it Actually I don't have one. When I got this thing it had been sitting for while. It was basically complete except for a starter, distributor, and front drive shaft. The PO had a little mechanic shop and threw in an HEI dizzy and also "the front drive shaft that came off of it". I attached the picture. I had a feeling that it wasn't the right one but I took it anyway. I think it is for a newer 73-87. Notice the bolt on flange instead of the yoke, plus its overall length is longer. I'm contemplating on how to put my yoke on it and make it work. With my lift, the extra inch might actually work out to my advantage. Any ideas?

because the claw hammer and a rubber mallet were the only things in the garage...and the mallet didn't work so well

Go buy youself a big a** ball peen.....you will find so many uses that you never even imagined. They make the ends of your fingers look sooooo cool.

I use a 40 oz.hand maul for fine carpentry.I`m so good,I never learned what the claw wasfor`til someone told me(opening beer).

I always use big big ole paws to open my vodka bottle.....which i did earler...may explain why im posting so much.

16 oz!!-----LOL man! If yer gonna use carpenter tools in a mechanical situation a 24 oz Estwing framin hammer would be a better choice! Purty good pryin power too! That angle in the link looks so much better now.

I think everyone is missing the point. I didn't go BUY the 16 ouncer to do this job. It was 10pm at night, we got started on things, and the only "banging" apparatus that I could find was the little claw hammer. I was proud of myself for making do with was little was available to me. Yes, I will go spend money on a 2 lb this weekend.

I saw the driveshaft missing and thought you pounded it off with that and 16 ounces had someting to do with the fury in a bottle.All I can say is get a video of the next one or you`re banned!

Saturday i'll be working on my truck solo cuz Critter is out of town doing his honeydo's and sunday will be a full force balls to the wall wrench-a-thon to get my truck ready for next weekend when it makes it's 400+ mile round trip to Padre Island National Seashore for it's first ever fishing trip. Hopefully nothing blows up. This will be the farthest i've ever had it from home so i'll have to post a full report on how it goes...maybe i'll even take some pics.
