Sad day for my transmission
Well I decided to take a look at my tranny last nite. I'm really wanting to stay with the original 3 speed on the tree. However, when i popped the side plate off I found a lot of shavings and broken teeth. The little magnet in the bottom of the pan was full of metal. Someone was hard on that transmission. I called a local transmission shop and the guy told me it could cost upwards of $500 to rebuild. I was really hoping not to spend that much on that transmission. So now I don't know what I want to do. I don't know if I want to have it rebuilt or go with a different trans. I KNOW that I DO NOT want an automatic. Have any of you ever attempted to rebuild one yourself? If so, how difficult was it? Thanks

Re: Sad day for my transmission
If I were you, I'd try and find a replacement. They are very good tranny's when not driven by an idiot (insinuating previous owner(s) not current owner ). Most people nowadays have no clue how to shift them and tend to grind them. This is especially true with the pre-69 non syncro'd tranny which is probably what is in your 68. Automatics have contributed to the dumbing down of America.
I see a lot of auto conversions done here so I'd bet there is a low mileage replacement out there. Be aware that the 67/67 tranny (4 bolts on side cover) is different than the 7 bolt cover 69-up version. If you don't get the exact replacement you will have driveshaft length and shift arm issues to deal with. They are heavy to ship, but I've had them sent UPS in the past. Keep the 3 on-the-tree 6 banger, it's what these trucks are all about!

Re: Sad day for my transmission
Speedway motors here in Lincoln Nebraska has remanufactured 3 speeds for $459.00 item #91029025. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Re: Sad day for my transmission
I have a couple 3 speed trannies - one in a running truck that I have thought about upgrading and the other one I am getting for free so would be willing to pass on to you if we could get it to you economically.

Re: Sad day for my transmission
I bought a syncro replacement for $75.00 It bolted right in.I didn't even have to adjust the shift levers.Took about and hour to swap it out and I stopped twice for a cold one.Stock height truck and I was thin enough at the time to do it without jacking the truck up.It was a while back.

Re: Sad day for my transmission
5 bills is not a bad price for a comercial place to charge to rebuild an out dated tranny... heck.. any tranny for that matter.

Re: Sad day for my transmission
I believe (if interested I will check make sure no one took it) I still have a 3-spd out of my 69. I put in a 4spd & that tranny worked fine just the linkage on the column wouldn't adjust due to the shaft in the column. I am 45-50 miles south of the gateway. I would work a trade, I need the linkage rod & brackets for a th350 auto for my GMC badly or cash?? PM me if interested.

Re: Sad day for my transmission
hard parts are going to be a bear to find, and will be priced like they were their children. Find a used unit, put new seals on it, and call it done.

I havn't even got to drive the truck myself yet. The body is off the frame now and I'll be able to put the motor and tranny in from the top. That is one reason I wanted to get everything ready. Oh well...another hump to cross. Thanks to everyone for their offers. I'm checking on a couple of them.
