Motor Identification

I have a 67 Chevy C10 that is currently having timing problems. I have had this truck a couple years and have never verified what motor is in it. Considering I might be buying distributer parts soon, I better figure it out quick. The PO replaced the motor in 94 with (according to the Western Auto receipt that he gave me) a 1975 Chevy 350 2 bolt main. My primary confusion is that is has an oil filler tube in front of the carb. I have been reading about the differences and similarities of the Chevy 350 and Olds 350. (1) Olds starter on driver's side, mine is on passenger, (2) Olds oil filter on passenger's side, mine is on driver's, (3) Olds separate oil filler tube on front of block above water pump, well mine has this...

Do I have a Chevy 350 or an Olds 350? Pic is attached.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Motor Identification

Its a small block chevy with the old style intake manifold. The replacement engines usually don't come with the intake, carb, dist, exhaust manifolds because the originals would have been transfered from the old engine to save money.

Re: Motor Identification

If you get the casting number and the serial number off the front pad and go to www.mortec.com you can find out what it is.

Re: Motor Identification

yep... you still need to make sure what engine is under those old parts... but that's probably exactly what happened.

Re: Motor Identification

Front pad: Front passenger side of motor, on block right below the head? Will I need the casting numbers too? They are on the back of the block, drivers side, correct?

Thanks!

correct. Mortec will tell by casting no's and http://www.nastyz28.com/decode.html will decode the suffix on front pad.

Re: Motor Identification

If you are buying a distributor your motor, take the old parts or your truck in. It definitely has a HEI distributor from your picture, which means the ignition has been updated.

hgs_notes: When you said "old style" intake, did you mean old as in old, or old as in Oldsmobile?

Everybody thanks for all the info. I will work on getting those numbers tomorrow. Today is ice storm clean up day. The only motors I will see today is the Ford tractor and the Stihl chainsaw!
