progress pic's (14 year old nephew's 68')
Here's a couple progress pic's of my nephew's truck. Also a link to the first Thread on this truck when he got it home. Keep up the kind words as in the first thread as it will help him not to lose interest while the money is short. He has all the help he would ever need in his Dad, Grandfather, uncle and myself. I just wish I was still working in my brothers garage 30'-50' with oil heat. I just live to far from them for it to be practical now.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=227231 EDIT: OFFICIAL BUILD THREAD FROM HERE ON OUT PROJECT: NEPHEW'S "68" SHORT FLEET My Nephew is 14 and paying for this project himself with a little help from us but, I will say not much. He works very hard for what he has and is well deserving in what he is going to end up with IMO. I added two pic's that were in the other thread here so you can see what the truck was like a little bit. So yo don't have to go back to the other thread if you do not want to.

Thats pretty good, you gotta start when there young so the truck is done by the time he gets his drivers lisence. I got my truck when I was 15 and i'm 17 now and the truck is still only half together. It's nice that you gives are giving him lots of help too.

Re: progress pic's (14 year old nephew's 68')
Is the 250 L6 staying in it? (looks too short to be a 292).
Just curious! On a project like this, if you're going to put in a 350, please let me know. For a first-truck project like this, I would be happy to mail a refurbished automatic tranny crossmember to you (stock) with some hardware to put it together. Anything to help out a youg fella catch the bug Wish him the best of luck on his project. If he reads anything, let him read this: Very few boys and girls get the privilege of building their own car from the ground up - a lot of them are stuck dreaming, building model cars instead. Your family is giving you a real gift. That truck is going to teach you a ton of stuff about cars, so you should be able to fix them on your own later in life, rather than pay out the nose to have someone else do it. Although it may not seem important now, you're going to cherish the time you get to spend together with your family working on that thing - this is another thing a lot of kids today don't get a chance to do. I'm saying all this because I was one of those kids that had a dad who took the time to sit down and work on my cars with me and show me how stuff works. I can still call him on the phone and work through problems with cars, stuff in the house, or anything else! Good luck with that thing. You have a ton of guys here at this forum that are behind you on your buildup!

Nice work, he should keep going with the truck! A little elbow grease, a wired brush and some paint, and that frame will look good as new.

Re: progress pic's (14 year old nephew's 68')
Thank You to all that are watching and the kind words of incouragement. A little history: I agree with all of you on how lucky my nephew is as I was in the garage at a very young age myself. Racing in super stock class at the age of 14 rebuilt my first SBC at that age also. 38 SBC's under my belt at this time and one in the works. The garage experience is one that will carry on in my family as well a my brothers. My girl freind has a boy that tuned 15 today and already has his 70 Firebird waiting for my trucks spot in the garage and its getting it as soon as the weather gets warmer.
Now to answer a few questions: shifty-Thanks for the offer on the crossmember but for now the I6 (it is a 250 3on the tree converted to floor shift BTW) is staying as money dosn't allow the swap but, I do have a good runnig 350 if his 6 dosent look too good after the tear down. smbrouss70-I also love to here it when someone has had good expeinces in the younger years and, hate to here it when they were bad. I wouldn't know what I would do if they had been bad that way for me. many projects to date for me and many in the works. JAKES 68GMC- As far as him giving up I not sure if it is in this boy to give up. The boy don't know how to sit still. His biggest problem is that he spent most of his savings on the truck itself. He is gung-ho on parts and doesn't have the money to buy them. CPNEJR- Progress is amzing at the time he was actually at this point over a week ago I just got to take the pics yesterday. So he is moving along quite fast for a first timer. Sorry about the long post but, I am as excited as he is maybe even more. He doesn't have the internet but, knows I post things for him and looks when he gets the chance school, my sisters place, where ever he can so you guys are a big help for him. Thank You all again and for anyone that come after it will not go un-noticed. RJ22

Not just because it'll be a cool truck, but for the kids of today, starting a big project and sticking it out from start to finish will prepare them for things in life we may never imagine. Good Luck and I hope he enjoys every aspect of it.

Re: progress pic's (14 year old nephew's 68')
I for got to mention this before FRENCHBLUE72 remark about one of the coolest truck in school reminded me. He told me every one in school said he was crazy for buying a CHEVY. All of his buddies like ferds. I went to that school, they must not be teachin those kids very well anymore is all I can say. BUT yea I would rather drive to school in something like his truck than just about anything on the road. RJ22

Update progress pic's (14 year old nephew's 68')
He's making progress as expected here's a few pi'c of what he's been up to. He is now working on the side and has a little money for some things he needs. The other two of the are of a freebe truck I picked up for parts I am giving him the complete 5 lug power disc setup to convert from his 6 lug drum brakes. Not to bad for free ay!

Re: progress pic's (14 year old nephew's 68')
I love the free stuff! WE both scored on this one there was alot of extra stuff that came along with it also two complete power steering set-ups boxes and pumps with brackets, couple of good three core rad's, extra set of doors pretty nice shape. I was shocked that I picked it up for free. He is real happy about the new free parts. RJ22

Anyone else with any kind words for him. He has done all of the engine cleaning and pre& paint him self. I forgot to tell him about the cost of a new fuel pump over painting the old one but he is ambitious to say the least.

Tell your nephew to listen to you, his dad, granddad, but most especially, listen to his MOM!
Seriously, it's fun watching them young teens working on something that's theirs. My 13 yo has a '67 step K10. He calls it his sexy truck. HA! Here is him removing the windshield from his original cab: If there are any parts your nephew needs and we have them, let me know....I'll be glad to save them for him!!

Sexy truck I like that. My nephew doesn't have a name for his yet..hmm..."I don't think".
Any way Thanks for the offer on the spare parts I offer the same in return. He really lucked out on this one. He's not going to need alot of replacement stuff. I'm glad he found a nice one for his first resto. Now if I could only find one as nice as his

Re: progress pic's (14 year old nephew's 68')
I Love to see the drive and ambition come out in a kid that is focused. Tell him to keep up the good work. And have him share what knowledge he gains in life. Like his uncle Jason so readily does with us less knowledgable. I have three sons between 19 and 26 that could care less about turning a wrench. (what a shame )
