Stock Steering question...
For those of you who have removed your stock steering column/gearbox, How did you do it? Whats the procedure. I have removed the steering wheel and pulled apart the gearbox. The worm gear and the square watchamacallit that travels up and down the worm gear are still in the box. The hub on top of the column is still on as well. I tried a puller to get the hub off, but it dosen't fit well and it's breaking the metal on the hub. It won't budge. My new column should be here Wednesday and I'd like to get this POS OUT!!!

What hub? it should be once the steering wheel is off you have a horn contacts and a mast bearing under that. the shaft comes out the bottom of the box.

The silver part with the horn contact in the 1st pic. I guess I have to find some kinda puller that will get a good grip on it...

You need to use a puller, but you don't even have to remove that. You need to leave the column attached to the box and remove the whole box. You don't plan on swapping just "columns" do you? You couldn't really do that without some SERIOUS fab work if you plan on installing a newer style tilt or something you need to swap out the whole steering box and all. My brother just got a power steering set up for one of those 55-59 trucks and it should be on ebay right now. We bought a whole axle with disc brakes and power steering at a swap meet yesterday and I put the disc brakes on ebay last night and he should have the powersteering on there as well.
But that aside, you need to unbolt the box from the frame and pull the whole thing out the bottom of the truck with the column on. Brian

Thats an after market deal. You will need a steering wheel puller that is round plate with 3 slots in it. and as martin said pull it all out from the bottom. you may have to remove the header.

Just got it out. No need to pull the header. Removed the "hub" and just pulled it all out with no problems. I didn't realize the part on top wasn't stock. Forgive my ignorance!

Bob, I don't see where that wouldn't work. You will probably have to redo the shaft depending on how it lines up with the box ans the length. We had a Grand Prix column in a 52 during one of the mockups and it seemed to be fine. I would say go for it especially if you already have it. What's the worst that can happen???? It won't fit and you have to do something else.

The guy wants extra for the steering column. We still haven't made a deal yet. When I get it together and I decide which direction I want to head in. I'll start a thread. Today this local body guy told me that a 1984 short bed Chevy truck frame was the same and a 1957 truck body would just bolt right on with out all the work of a Camaro clip. That you would have just about everything. Has anyone ever heard of such a conversion??

well, i am trying to use the column out of the 77 nova that i took my clip from. the main problem i am working on right now is finding a way to mount it. all the column drops that i can find are for 2" columns, and mine is 2.5" so i may have to fabricate something there. floor mount is easy, as it is 2" at the bottom, so i am using the flaming river lower ball mount. connecting to the steering box couldn't be too hard with some u-joints, but i haven't gotten that far yet.

I guess I am a little slow as I do not quite follow this post. Are you pulling everything off the top of the columb so it will fit through the floor hole? I need to get the cab off a 51 and obviously the columb needs to come off. What is the simplest least amount of dissasembly way to get this columb out? Thanks Jerry

yes, i removed everything from the top, unbolted the steering box, and pulled it through the floor

i have a 77 nova front clip on my 55, i used a 89 s-10 blazer steering colum, it's mounting bracket, with brake padle and booster, lot's of room, and it sit's nice in the cab as well.
