? Cab Lights ?
Question in the parts board got me thinking. I have alot of pic's of these trucks (708) to be exact I checked the folder count. Well some are of the same truck different angles so lets say 650. Enough of that.
NOT ONE truck with cab lights. It amazed me. I admit that I don't care for them either and was going to change cabs to get rid of them but are they rare or just undesirable like in my case. As a matter a fact both of my trucks have them. Just different styles. I think the ones on the 4x4 are dealer or after market installed but, someone can correct me if I'm wrong. The ones on the swb 2wd are factory. Here's pic's. Like I said ARE THEY RARE OR UNDESIRABLE Let me know what you all think. I might keep them just to be different who knows. LONGHORNMAN I'm counting on ya for this one for sure if anyone has the #'s you will. Your avatar pic has em' Thank you. RJ22 |

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
To each his own but I love rare options. The special sheetmetal makes them harder to add if it weren't factory - not like trim, emblems, or wheels.
I know a guy who welded an entire new top to his cab to get the running lights.

So is what your saying is that it is rare. That don't sound right but I think you'll get what I mean. RJ22

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
I almost bought a '71 with those lights on a few years back, a stock orange one. It was a nice truck, but I didn't like the lights, and the guy thought they were worth more money, so I passed.

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
Back when I first bought this truck, I wasn't very fond of them, but I got used to them, even appreciate them at night on the open road (people seem to drive better when they think a big truck is coming at them), and they are stayin' where they are as long as I have it.

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
RARE does not always equate to DESIRABLE...and this really holds for those cab lights. I love them on the big trucks and think they look silly on a short fleetside that lays frame. To each his own however...and I wish I had them on my Longhorn!

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
the ones on your red truck are the correct ones for 71 - 87 and up to like 91 or 92 on the one ton and bigger trucks.
These amber ones are correct for 69 and 70. I went custom on mine, installed clear lenses with amber bulbs; Here's the link to what i did; http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...85#post1768785 As you can see, mine is NOT an original clearance light truck, my roof is flat. I figured I'd see what i think on a junk cab, and when a new cab is being looked for, I'd know if I wanted with, or without. I will certinaly look for a cab WITH the raised mounting pads. All the cab chassis trucks with the daul rear wheel option had them... so they can't be called rare at all. However, the lighter duty the truck, the less likely you'd find them. I've only seen a few 1/2 tons with them. Being the way GM did it, they were a manditory option with the daul rear wheels... along with side marker lights (still optional in 68 and 69) So if you were to look up the % of trucks with clearance lights as an option, it would make it sound like,m a whole bunch opted for them, but at least 90% (my personal guess) of the trucks with them, were required to have them. In other words... there's no acurate way of knowing how many pick ups had them. |

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
stllookn I agree with that for sure I have seen some pretty rare things in my life that I am glad are rare. But I think ya missed my point I am wondering if the reason ya don't see that many is because there were low #'s on em'. Or if it is just that so many really don't like em'. Kinda looking for your opinions and if anyone know prodution figures. RJ22

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
Longhorn Man you are the man. You got in there before my last post. I see the delema on the # stuff here. Thanks. I guess the reason it never accured to me is that with these two having them and, another that I wish I would have never gotten rid of also factory swb 2wd with the same lights as my red one in pic. They just didn't seem rare on 1/2 tons either. Learn something one here daily. I love this place. RJ22

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
Like most options, there`s not numbers kept.On all but the dual wheel trucks they were options. They`re rare like bucket seats, big blocks,am/fms,etc.Back then there were certain accessories that were desireable to old school truck guys.Like:cab lights, bed rails, big mirrors, grille gaurds, chrome eyelids on head lights, mud flaps, hood ornaments....The options that were more car-like,which was a new concept at the time, are the ones the new school desires now.
When Danbury Mint made the shortbed Fleetside I couldn`t believe they put cab lights on it and not whitewalls. They missed the mark.

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
I wish my beater hadn't been a dually to start with. If I'd had to pay for a cab, I sure wouldn't have bought a cab with lights, but the price was good at free ninety free.
I just did a redneck shave job with flat aluminum plates and some white paint.

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
I bought a cab light high-hump a/c cab to build one of my 4wds into a K/30.Now I`m selling them and building a shortbed stepside K/30.The cab goes on that.I prolly wouldn`t have wanted the lights on that. But,it`ll be a 1ton and they look purdy dang kewl on high-ridin`4wds.

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
I agree with ya. They seem to fit on some and look totaly out of place on others. I guess it really depends on the truck and the owner both. I'll make up my mind when I get to that point. Thanks for all the replies. RJ22

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
It's a truck, so they belong. Now if you've emasculated your truck to the point they don't look right, you may want to rethink your plans. Here are a couple of work turds that they are right at home on, and one alternative way of "shaving" them.

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
I saw that truck up in Ontario Canada's wine country. It was a perfect modification making the truck more utilitarian. I presume is was designed to maximize transporting a load of grapes from the vinyard. Long on function, but short on comfort.

That makes it even better. I didn't pick out that it was sitting in a parking lot. I thought it was a truck someone was stripping in the first pic Whould be fun for hay wagon rides. RJ22

It also had a 292 I6. What could be better than a haywagon powered by a 292?

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
exactly what I think. I love cab lights but the ones on ours.. I do have to say are pretty darn ugly. They just stick out so much compared to the newer style trucks.

Re: ? Cab Lights ?
Stomper - I have a friend down here in Tacoma that is doing the same thing. His is a 67 3/4T. It is not lifted but is tall by nature. He grafted on a 72 cab top about 8 to 12 inches back to get the raised pads. A bodyman is doing it and will be GLUING the panel on - bonding it with special adhesive that is supposed to be stronger than the metal. The metal will tear before the bond gives.
Maybe CPNE or Andy knows but weren't these lights required by DOT on 1T's starting around 67/68? I know alot of the safety features (side markers, etc.) were mandated around that time - cars in 68 and trucks shortly thereafter. They are not my favorites but I appreciate the effort people go to retain the ORIGINAL look.
