Bed options/ideas

Well I know there's always been alot of controversy about putting late-model beds on classics trucks, most notably 88-98 GM stepside beds. (not Z71 beds...I caught alot of crap for calling them that in a previous post, terribly sorry)

There has been some talk of putting a 99 and up stepside GM bed on 67-72 chevys. However, I think this would be a good thread to post different ideas and picture of any kinda of different bed options or heavy bed modifications.

Hopefully, this could become a refrence thread for anyone who is considering doing a bed swap...all years of trucks are welcome as well.

not a big fan of the newer beds on 67-72s...nothing beats a good swb or lwb fleet...but we all like different things thats why we all come to this board..if we all had the same trucks we wouldnt need this board..good luck with your project !

yea, i actualy agree. The main reason for my bed swap was money. My fleetside bed was nothing more than a plywood floor and wheel tubs, the parts truck didnt have a bed, and the 93 bed was free, so...you get the idea.

If i still have the truck when I finish paying for school, maybe I'll go back to an original bed, but for now, it'll be cheap, and street legal for me =]

if it were a lwb i have a few decent beds for it...but not swb beds..yet...

i personally like the original boxes (especaily stepsides ), btw does any one know where a guy can get patch panels for lower front of stepside fenders seems it would be cheaper than a whole new fender?

How much different is a modern bed floor as compared to a 72 bed floor? How much modification would it take to make a new one fit?

I have a stepside bed out of a '72 that I could sell you that includes the rear lighting. It is in primer but in pretty good shape except for the back bottom side of one of the fenders looked like it had a few bad spots. The steps are both there, and the rear tailgate is a louvered "bowtie" gate.
Only problem...it has no bed...well unless you count a piece of plywood as a bed. I'm just guessing at value here based on replacement cost and could be WAY off....but I'd take $500 for it or $550 with the rear bumper. I think it's worth that to me in parts so I'd guess it would be to others?

I also have snaps style gray tonneau cover for it with a white bowtie in the center. Snaps are on the bed, and I'd take $35 plus S&H for the cover with cross rails.

68 GMC...your price sounds reasonably, but unfortunately, I still can't afford it. Its been 5 years on this truck and im just about ready to do paint and interior, so rather than delay it further, I think I'll stick with what I have...but good luck with the sale, Im sure somebody here would be glad to take that off your hands. Thanks

timcos- The 88-98 bed floor has different mounting points, and is flat, so you will need risers/spacers in some spots. There are 3 holes one each side, you will need to make brackets for all of them. The front holes end up outside the frame and need spacers. the middle holes end up outside the rails and do not need spacers. and lastly, the rear mounts end up over the frame rails, but above the outside edge, so you will need to make brackets that rise about the frame and are a little bit wider. mounting like this shoud bring the body lines pretty darn close...hope that helps

I am 16 me and my dad recently went and picked up my 71 stepside up. Theand it doesn't have the bottom of the bed so anybody have ideas for the cheapest temporary thing I could do but still make it look good?

The wood to fill up the bed is really cheap if you just go with some home improvement store grade stuff.

All you need are...
2 1x4
2 1x6
4 1x8
All 76 inches or so in length (for short step)
You will need to rip the 1x4s down a bit, but the other boards are you have to do is cut to length. They are all held in place with the metal strips (if you do not have those, a set runs around $40-$60 for the plain steel ones up to a few hundred for hidden bolt chrome.

If you go with the Home Depot cheap pine wood the wood cost is around $25-$30, throw in $10 or so worth of stain and then $20 of Polyurethane and it should last a while
