3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
On one hand, I've got a bad ignition miss. The truck will sputter and idle rough because of it.
On the other hand, I can get my hands on a complete 3.73 rear end with posi, for about the same price as the ignition system. Can't do both right now. What would you do? |

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
So what would you be replacing on the ignition system that would cost as much as a posi rear end
No brainer the posi!!! |

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
Well if it don't run you can't drive it over to my house to tell you whats really wrong with it. lol If you can get the miss fixed on the cheep than get the rear end too. I just got my rear end 12 bolt 3.73 w/posi off creigslist for $150. Got it from a guy in Chandler. It has new Richmond gears and new posi and i'm putting it in this weekend.

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
for less than $60 you can have a new HEI >It was stolen about 5-6 years ago (before Ryan owned it) so the insurance company paid for it. It was recovered w/ no damage but it has a rebuilt title now.
get some store brand wires from autozone, or other chain parts store-less than $20 and sparkplugs can be had from wal-mart for around $13 60+20+13= $93, fix it first, you can get performance parts later

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
Are you sure you dont just need a cap/rotor/coil/wires/plugs ? If the HEI is really old the mechanical advance mechanism will be very sloppy and will cause the motor to run less than great sometimes during part throttle and acceleration as the advance will be coming in and out constantly. You can probably find a used in good shape for not too much.
I had one that had a really sloppy and worn out advance mechanism, but even then the truck still pretty decently with a good cap, rotor, coil, wires, and plugs. Sometimes you would stomp down on it and acceleration would be mediocre and other times it would bark the tires like crazy when it hit 2nd gear. That was rare though and the truck ran great for the most part. Unless the mechanism is seriously damaged, like the weights stuck completely in any given position, it sounds like it might just need a tune up. |

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
umm... thats a no brainer. Fix the ignition!!! You must get the truck running correctly before buying things that are not necessary.
What is wrong with the ignition? Your "bad miss" can be anything from a plug/wire to a flattened cam lobe. Besides, leaving the truck running poorly can only amount to worse problems. These problems can be more serious on emisions vehicles- like damage to catalytic converters. Either way, I would worry about getting the truck running properly first Good luck -Jeremy

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
i'm gonna have to agree with jermasaurus.man you gotta be able to get from point a to point b,if it isn't a daily driver then it might be different.get that bugger running right then worry about the hind end.

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
The truck has an ignition miss. It's not bad, but it bothers me. It's a very slight miss and only does it about every 10 seconds when idling. It's never come close to dying or anything.
It's not a worn cam lobe. The engine is a GM crate with about 1000 miles on it. I guess I posted this wrong. It's not like it's about to break, it's just a little shutter in the ignition when sitting at a stop light. Nothing major. Someone pointed out my sig saying I already had the 3.73. Well, I put that up there the day I was supposed to go get the rear end. That fell through, but I can get it for sure tomorrow. And yes, the new rear end is a rebuilt one with 0 miles and posi for about 100 bucks. |

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
sounds like a lean miss or the carb has a drip that makes it do that

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
Hope I didn't come off sounding rude. It sounded like a typical situation I see at work here and there. But you say it only misses once every 10 sec or so? Did you use new plugs/wires/cap/rotor when you dropped that morot in?

Re: 3.73 w/ posi or my ignition
Ok guys, I went ahead and did the ignition. I got a new cap, rotor, and HEI coil.
I hooked it up to the multi and it showed teh coil as being bad. Also, the old cap and rotor were cheap autozone parts, so I went with some good stuff from work. With all 3 items, I payed about 40 bucks. Gotta love shop discounts. But all this fixed the problem. Turns out I had another problem that was slowly developing that was also directly related to this. At high RPM the engine was hesitating BAD. It felt as if it was starved for fuel, or as if I was letting off the gas for a minute, then back on. It was getting worse and worse, and these new parts fixed that as well. I guess the rear end will have to wait. There's no sense in having it if the ignition is fubar'd |
