Re: $850 repair?!?
I'm not a body man, but I guess it depends on the labor. A new bedside and tailgate can be had for less than that, but by the time you prime and paint it would probably be around that, maybe more.

Re: $850 repair?!?
Yikes I would get my money back if thats what they did for 850 bucks
Actually you should post this over in the body paint section. Ive seen lessor damage cost more than that...but thats on a newer car so maybe thats different. |

Looks like a rip-off to me for 850 bucks, but I'm no body-man either.

Re: $850 repair?!?
He quoted you 850.00 to straighten the panel or to replace the bedside? Are any moldings included in this.

Re: $850 repair?!?
That price was to "straighten" the bed side and primer only!! Oh yeah-and BONDO! I have the parts to replace the damaged ones. The tailgate is flawless.

Re: $850 repair?!?
Atleast. If you replaced the bed side rather than pulling it, it would be much more.

Re: $850 repair?!?
Thats high to me but these bedsides are tough metal especially in the corners. I would estimate the dent at around 12 hours to repair and at 40.00 an hour out here that is 480.00 plus 50.00 to shoot some primer on it so 850.00 is high, or he is high, with no paint.

Re: $850 repair?!?
I agree. That is not an easy spot to straighten. $850 sounds like a good deal IF it is done right.

Re: $850 repair?!?
Yup, Sad as it is, I'd say it's a fair price. You didn't say what he charges per hour, but in a lot of places $60-80 is the going rate. It doesn't take long to burn up that kind of money in labor alone. That dent is in a tough spot also. I just paid my bodyman for 11 hours of his time to straighten the Studebaker fender, plus materials at the cost of $520. He charges $35 which is a heck of a deal. Good Luck.

Re: $850 repair?!?
Fair deal if it's good quality work, would be a really good deal if you could get him to blend and clear the bedside for that or something close to it.......Jerry

Re: $850 repair?!?
I think a few missed that he was suppling parts and that there was only the primer being sprayed. I agree with ya 72CSTC5 & N2TRUX I'm no body man by any means but I worked in a body shop for three years just decided wrenching was more my style.

Re: $850 repair?!?
I dont think its high at all. For one if that come into MY stall with 12hrs someone would be getting a supplement, as I think 12 is low.
Even thou, at 12hrs at 50 bucks per hr thats 600. Depending on your location in CA 50 bucks is cheap, I know of areas that are in the 80 dollar range. Now you figure say 2hr to mask and prime at 50 bucks, we have a total of 700 bucks. 150 bucks off from someone who looked at it in person vs someone who is looking at it thou a computer screen is pretty darn close IMO.

Re: $850 repair?!?
$850 sounds a little high. You could probably get a complete other bed for less than that. Shoot you could be lucky enough to score an entire truck for less!

Re: $850 repair?!?
I could agree to that, of course even if it were in perfect shape, but a different color, by the time it was prepped and painted to match, we'd be talking $850 again, but that's what's wrong with the whole picture. I had my buddie take my 85 4x4 down to a body shop he was getting setup to buy. The current owner, his friend, took one look at it and said "tell your buddy he can't afford me". He saw a $4000 pickup, figured a complete paint job with all the prep time, etc, he would have to charge me $3000. (Most 85's aren't worth $7000).The cost of paint jobs are extreme because the body shop industry can make so much more off of insurance work. Most people that pay for a proffesional paint job will find they'll never get their money out of it come resale time. I'm talking about vehicles that are just run of the mill, nothing special kinda stuff. That's why I'm determined to learn to do my own bodywork, paint, etc. Makes the hobby more affordable. JMO.

Re: $850 repair?!?
That spot is hard to pull out, however they do make a patch panel for that section. Seems like about 6 to 8 hours work on that corner alone. I say go get a dent puller or arivet welder and do it yourself. It takes a little time and a lot of patients.

Re: $850 repair?!?
thatll buff out fine.......sorry but somebody had to
but the price does sound pretty reasonable and im not a body man by occupation but by hobby even though that doesnt really count but i do know what does and can go into fixing dents and metal work and just like all have said thats a very hard place to work with, im a do it myself guy but i would either check some other shops that do good work and that you would trust and see if you can find one cheaper if not go with him and see if you can get more work out of him other than that id just do it myself i hope it works out for you and best of luck with it

Maybe the guy priced it high cause he doesn't want to do the job?
