Are there any antenna available for AM/FM radios that do not require a mast antenna. I'm looking for a window mounted one, or anything that doesn't require drilling a hole in a metal panel. If any one has any custom ideas or equipment please let me know...bossrod

Have you tried search? It's been a few years since I have seen the post, but someone had a post going about alternative antennas, and there was a link to one that mounted under the dash. I will look to see if by chance I saved it in my info stash, and if I have it, I will post it back on this thread.

I have the older version of this but I ran the wire through the factory antenna hole and sealed it with RTV. ran and zip tied the wire in the area in front of the wiper linkages (would just call it what it is but I would butcher the word CAWLING) then mounted it under one of the crossover support pieces. The antenna has an FM booster and is only $25.

I have a universal "sport style" rubber antenna mounted under my dash currently, and signal strength isn't that great. So maybe this one would do.

That is assuming that you have the same antenna's (not a knock off), which I do take your word on.

cost for me on the metra 44ua20 is 20 after tax. so thirty shipped is a good deal. It's a good unit too. installed many in hot rods and such.

FWIW, I can vouch for DJRacer. Over the years I've bought a head unit and an alarm from him and I'd buy one of these, but won't be able to use my truck for possibly another year and can't justify it.

Check this one out. Scroll down and look for the powered hidden antenna. I have seen the ones that look similar to the Crutchfield one listed that needs to be stuck to the inside of the windshiled or other glass. This one can be mounted pretty much anywhere from the way it looks.

The one I got from Fry's Is the same thing as the crutchfield one and when you pull out your old antenna you just run the wires for the new one through the same hole. then just mount it under the hood, tucked under the fender, or just in the cawling like I did.

I used a Tune Trapper antenna that I bought on Ebay. It requires no ground to the metal body and they work GREAT! I have one in each of my trucks. I mounted them on the cardboard protector for the gas tank in the cab....just below the level of the seatback. They are hidden and they really do work well. I kept my stock antenna for the stock AM radio in the dash of both trucks. The Tune Trapper antennas are for the hiddedn stereo systmes I have in both trucks.

I havent seen any that require a ground to the body. The extra wire is for the power for the FM amp. and it is grounded through the radio.

I will probably be ordering from Metra Monday if anyone needs kits, antenna's amp kits speak up. I will sell stuff to board members at really low margins! Metra has 1/4 inch din trim rings that hide the little shaft indentions on the side of a din radio installed in our dashs. I am also gonna order some shaft units from Custom Autosound if you don't want to cut the dash!

I didn't want to ruin the truck or mess with the Chevy truck gods by cutting a perfect cowl so I did this. It's not really that noticable IMO and works very well. It's just a single piece mast 29 inches.

I installed the Metra unit from djracer.

It is fair. Wouldn't say it is the best reception - and I am using a fairly high end Pioneer receiver, so I don't think it is problems on that end. I can pick up any high power station pretty clear - but anything that doesn't have an extremely strong signal will have a little static. I don't really care. I don't listen enough to care. And on top of that - I have several MP3 CD's that I listen to.
