interpreting 1951 VIN number

Does anyone out there know how a Vin number on a 51 Chevy truck can be read as far as equipment(engine), assembly location and series number of assemblyetc.? I know how it reads oin my 69- 72s, but not on the older model.
bought an owners manual on ebay for the info (since it's in the later model manuals) but it would be nice to know sooner! Thanks!!

Re: interpreting 1951 VIN number

I have tried that one before and unfortunately mine is a 4400 series 1 1/2 ton and that one seems to be for pickups only. Thanks for trying though!

Thanks!
so far I've got UK 1 1/2 ton utility, 161 WB
L - Los Angeles assembly plant
448- Aspen Green paint (Which is under there)

Now for the engine and other codes. I believe it is a 216 but not sure

Engine # seems to have an extra letter but......
(A)
J -1951
E - Vehicle designation (haven't found yet)
A -Flint Michigan- Regular Engine
Sequence # 64483

Re: interpreting 1951 VIN number

Got a picture of the passenger side of the engine? If it's a 216, the lifter cover extends ot the top of the head.

Best way I know is to find the casting number on the side of the block, usually around the starter. It will be raised letters, not that hard to find with a scraper. Some are behind the starter. The go to www.inliners.org and look under casting numbers. There also some links for more numbers, one goes to Bulters A1. Go to the bottom of that page and click on the Chevy logo for more.
