Project on hold

Does this happen to anybody besides me?

Recently I put an HEI in my '67 and as I was working along, I became aware of LOTS of things I could do next. While looking around for some part sites for my truck in the internet, I came upon a set of box sides for a real decent price. I then began searching for a way to get them home, hem hawed around and finally got things lined up. Then the wife sez, "your truck is now running fine and do you really NEED those panels? The bathroom NEEDS to be remodeled."
Well, that shot the hell out of all of the momentum I was building up for the next truck project.
I got to work the next day and had an email from the guy with the parts I wanted and he sez, you waited too long......................SOLD!

Guess what I'm doing this week end? Buying and installing a new toilet. Woo Hoo!
The wife did mention that when our middle child goes to college next year, I will have 2 open garage stalls in which to tear down the truck and make it pretty. Maybe by then I'll be done with the bathroom.

Re: Project on hold

Don't feel bad. Happens to me all the time. I have been working for almost 1 year on a home remodel that started as one room and morphed into a full kitchen remodel, wood stove, wall units etc. I can only really work on it on the weekends but it's getting there. I do get an hour here or there to work on my truck(s). She let's me fix the C20 work truck because I can haul more stuff for the remodel!

Don't count on it. If you are anything like me, I started putting new trim in the living room and hallway a year ago and it still isn't finished. What's the rush right?

Very NICE!!

I was gonna do that but the wife has this WANT/NEED gulit trip she is very skilled at. So the only extra I was allowed was a riser for the air cleaner to clear the HEI unit.
Actually, we're trying to pay off some serious medical copay and I need to be frugal for a while. You know, priorities. The wife is actually a real trooper and looks good too!

Re: Project on hold

I've often thought that we should start life as retired seniors. We'd have all of the experience, all of the time, and even a bit of cash. I am 24 and getting going is tough. My wife wants:
hardwood floors
bigger deck
nursery
station wagon for the kids/dog
bathroom remodel (moving walls and putting in a hot tub)

and others. I can't honestly see how I am ever going to be able to put money into toys.

We're right there with you man. Hang in there.

I'm getting close to being a retired senior. I started my family @ age 36 and still have a 16 yr old daughter and 13 yr old son at home. I did all my rodding and raising hell when I was young.
I hear ya on spreading the family bucks around and having toys to boot! It's definitely a juggling act and it seems the toys get hind tit.
You are a young man, have a family and enjoy it, the toys will come soon enough.
There is NOTHING cooler than delivering your first born............although a new paint job for the truck comes pretty close.

Thanks for the input and you hang in there too! I'm sure most of have been in a similar situation in our lives.

Re: Project on hold

I know *exactly* what you mean. I have three projects in the works right now that are all on hold because funding for them has been transferred to house/etc needs. Not to mention my total lack of time to work on them.

I guess paying the car insurance is rather important though.

Re: Project on hold

I have a portion of my paycheck diverted to my "secret" account. Think of it as an allowance that I can spend on anything without spouse issues. If there is money leftover from the "normal" account to spend on toys, then it's a bonus.

It's like a rainy day fund that has come in handy more than once.

Re: Project on hold

I know what you guys mean. Everytime I squander a little cash for the truck, we always need something. There goes the cash. I bought a newer home so I didn't have as much work to do to it but isn't that a dream. She wants to change everything around here. Break out the brick from the bedroom and add french doors so she can walk out to the pool and then wants a deck too, break up all the pebble stone all over the back yard and wants tile. Yeah right, and I want my truck and Blazer done too.

Oh the secret accout is a must. When I did my 80 gmc 3/4 ton she thought I spent $500.00 total including the paint.
Real price $5000.00 + whats a zero or two going to do? right.

Re: Project on hold

Try working on your projects, I have 2 but that's my fault , but... you
can't use any of the monthly budget to do it. That's right, the only time I
get anything done is if I can horse trade, sell something, or make extra $*.

*Based on the above statement I have ask to be buried in my trucks so
that they will in essence be finished about the same time that I am also.

Re: Project on hold

My $.02
Keep the truck no matter what.

It will always be there and it always takes longer to "finish these" things than we want.

The money (or enough) is never there when you really want it.

I try to do like LUV said and do things outside of the normal. My wife is good about my hobbies, so she says nothing about what I spend, because she knows I always put the living things first. I don't hide what I spend, nor do I recommend that, when she asks, she sees. She almost never asks though.

Just take your time and it will happen. I think my wife queries more about why I like something that is just a pile of discolored parts, than how much it is costing me. And tryust me, I am married to an accountant, so they always track money, Right LUV! It is my relaxation. I go, beat sheet metal, tinker, and have fun with it. Like LUV mentioned, hopefully we'll cruise together before we are in the grave together.
