Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
I was just curious if there are any benefits to going to 5 lug rather that keeping the 6 lug. I plan to convert to disk so I have the option?

Yeah. Try finding nice wheels for a 3/4 ton. Not a whole lot of options.

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
looks like 5 lug is the way to go. Where I might find the five lug axles is the question now?

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
Everyone pretty much nailed it. I would suggest that you pick out what rims you want first and let them dictate the bolt pattern. I switched to 6 but then all the rims I liked were 5 so now I'm kinda screwed. Also, I dont know a whole lot about the axles but i would think taking a whole one off a 67-70 half ton would be the easiest way unless you feel like taking one apart and taking just the stuff you need.

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
Well I would like to beef up the axle shafts any ways to handle the torque of a 454. I would imagine that jegs or summit may be able to help me there.

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
I'm doing the disk conversion and keeping 6 lugs. Going to be running stock steel wheels so wheel selection didn't matter to me. I also didn't want the added expense of changing out my rear axles or complete rear end. It all adds up.

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
5 lug will allow you to easily install rear discs, ie Impala or Camaro calipers, rather than the more expensive Kits.
summit carries 5 lug axles...

cg,i don't know if you have tried it or not but my stock wheels will not go on my 6 lug disc rotors.if i tighten the lugs all the way down the wheel hits the calipers.i'm running aftermarket wheels so it's ok with me,but if i have a flat i hope it's not on the front.... |

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
I went with 6-lug rotors, on my C-10, rather than try to find the correct length axles. ...no regrets; drove with 22 lug nuts for far too many years. Also helps maintain the stock appearance of the truck.

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
I'm in the process of swapping so I maybe be speaking to soon but I would recommend going with a 73-87 swap for three reasons. 1) disc brakes 2) 5 lug 3) cheap a$$ parts. Compare part prices.
CPP is selling 6 lug rotors for $129/pair plus shipping. You can pick up 73-87 rotors at your local parts store for $30 a piece. Last edited by Ole Blue 68; 04-05-2007 at 10:22 AM. |

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
Oh yes, let's all make our trucks weaker so that they look cooler. If you did have a 3/4 ton (8 lugs), and you were dead set on 5 lug wheels, if it is 4x4, sell it to someone who will use it, and buy a 1/2 ton. Guys wanting to do serious off-roading would appreciate being able to start off with a tougher truck.

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
So the 5 lug setup is weaker than the 6? I wouldn't imagine it would be to much of a difference, I mean if you used hardened studs wouldn't it be stronger?

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
no, the more lugs you have the more torque it has holding the wheels on..... thats why all the Mustang guys go from 4 to 5.... but as long as your not climping hills and jumping rocks I wouldnt even worry about it

He wants to swap from 6 lug to 5. The 1/2 ton trucks came stock with 5 lugs in 71-72.

No. I doubt I will be jumping rocks much. I'm setting this up as a street machine. Not a lifted 4x4 mud jumper.

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
5 lugs is plenty to hold it together, maybe going form 8 lugs to 5 might effect something, i dunno

Re: Any reason to swap from 6 lug to 5?
I kept the 6 lug setup when I went to disc in the front. I went with 6 lug ralley's but there are quite a few 6 lug aftermarket options. Not as much as 5 lug though.
