Signal lights not working
OK I bought a 69 GMC 1/2 ton and I am trying to get it road worthy......
Signal lights do not work at all. Hazard lights work on all four corners and the flasher is working in this function. Taillights work. Brake lights work. Headlights work on bright and dim. But when I move the indicator nothing happens (key on, but engine not running while in the garage). The truck has a 3 speed manual column shift and I had to swap that out as the shifter was broken off and the PO had made a mess of the column with a homemade shifter. The signal lights did not work before I changed the column either. Also when I changed columns the PO had cut the wires going into the column, then reconnected each one, I guess he didn't see the plug to disconnect! I do have a multi-tester and I would like to know what tests I can run to try and find the problem.

Re: Signal lights not working
Sounds like it is in the column itself. The parts are fairly reasonable for rebuilding the column switch.Should be a troubleshooting and rebuild thread in the FAQ's.

Re: Signal lights not working
being that you've had 2 columns in there, I can't see the same fault on 2 pieces... it COULD happen, but not likely.
I'll assume you have checked/tested/replaced the fuse. Have you tried swapping the flashers from one spot to the other...swapping the 4 way one for the turn signal one? That's a quick way to tell if one is good. |

Re: Signal lights not working
My truck turn signals only work when when the engine is running. Have you tried it with the engine running?

Re: Signal lights not working
they should work with the engine off, key on. Everything should work like that.

Well I guess I am the idiot, I looked under the dash at the fuse box and yes I only have one flasher, as I had expected, but room for two, not what I had expected! I swapped the flasher over to the turn signal circuit, and guess what, I have signal lights, well at least on the left side! I think I am having a ground problem on the right rear corner as my right rear brake light is also not working again. Longhorn Man, thank you for pointing out the obvious. I think I could have, probably would have spent days testing and reading my manual, and still not realized the obvious!
