Paint job costs

I've never priced paint jobs, but I'm trying to decide how far I want to take things with my truck. So, I saw this truck in another thread. I know no one can figure body work with out looking at my truck. So, body prep aside, how much does something like this cost? I know it's a lot more than a plain single color or even a plain two tone. I'm wondering just how spendy it is, though. I'd be doing this in TX if it matters any. Thoughts?

If I had to guess...and this is just that..a guess...

If all they had to do was prep/paint/wetsand/cut&polish...I'd guess..a minimum of 5k. from a professional shop.

If you know someone..or get it done on the side...then that's all up to what you can work out...

Mine needed very little bodywork and had been blasted. $7,500 for base coat/clear coat, one color. The truck in the picture is probably over $10K if you can find a shop to do it. They are usually interested only in the insurance business. I had a hard time finding someone to do mine.

Ouch! Well, we'll see. I was hoping for around 5K. 10+ is a but much. Who knows. We'll see what I can find and decide. I love it, though.

It will vary.Custom painters get big bucks to paint Harley pieces that take more labor/less paint...as much as $5,000.But,a reasonable painter could do that for no more than $5Gs,I`d think.On thing to do is hit it in stages.Get your overall color,then have the flames done later.The painter won`t like that idea and may get more reasonable on the on shot approach.But,if you do it in two stages,you can prolly get a good price on the overall job from someone other than a high-dollar trick painter.

I got estimates for "GQ" last summer, mine is a Cali body, zero rust, just
about as straight as an arrow, or better, and has several hundred hours
in the body shop, no it wasn't that bad, PO was a perfectionist and they
were going to go PPG triple BLACK which would show any lil blemish

My estimates came in from $2,500 to $12,500 (Low end was shops and the
high end was custom body shops, the kind that doesn't do Insurance work)

doing it yourself is the only cost effective way , I know everyone can't but it is the way to go if you can , heck I won't have 10K in my truck !!!!!!!!!!
you'd be surprised how cheap you can do a good paintjob too , I will probably have around $800 buck's in my 67's paintjob once done here in a few week's ,
I painted my 67 camaro about 5 year's ago had $375 in it total , SO IT CAN BE DONE ,,, good luck

My brother owns Henley's Kustom in Indy and the above prices are not far off at all. He does not paint for me but sure dishes out some good advice to me. I'm thinking candy apple red for my C 10 and the price of the paint would scare most. I may go the cheap? route of base coat and clear at $1300 for material alone.
It is all in the prep IMO and well worth the effort to do yourself if you can. Good looking Camaro

I love those high dollar paint jobs, but are they really practical? Maybe I'm just too hung up on the fact that my truck is just that - a truck. It still goes to Menard's and Home Depot where it is at the mercy of the lazy $#!+heads who don't walk their cart to the cart return. Or the mini-van mom with the doors swinging wide to get little Jimmy out of his baby seat.

With that thought process, I decided to paint my truck myself. It isn't done yet. It is far from perfect however I do get good comments.

I take each panel down to bare metal then spray them with MP170 - PPG gray epoxy primer. It runs about $80/gallon. The MP175 catalyst is about $25/quart. You need two quarts per gallon because you mix them 2:1.

For color I use single stage PPG Omni. MAE Acrylic Enamel. It is around $80/gallon for the two colors I've purchsed. White and medium metallic green. The reducer was about $20/gallon and the hardner was about $15.

In materials I'll have approximately $700 by the time I'm done. The beauty of doing it yourself is if you mess up you can just re-do it. AND you can save about $5000.

I only have the box left. I'm waiting for new 8' box sides. Here is what it looked like last fall:

I agree with Richard, rent a booth and do it yourself-It is hard to screw up a base coat clear coat job, then hire out flame job to custom painter, good luck

If you have a friend on a military base, they usually have a auto hobby shop. The one at Kirtland AFB has a paint shop. I also seem to remember the Naval Air Station in Alameda CA had one too, this is why I think they are common place at the shops.
Another option would be to have the graphic artist/ painter mask off the flames for you to paint.

The truck with flames at the beginning of this post is going to cost in the area of $15,000.00 at a some of the shops I have around here. There is a custom shop here that does work to that scale and higher charges $45.00 an hour in the shop and $64.00 an hour in the paint booth. That is just labor, add your paint cost---that depends on the quality of paint used. The better qualities are really getting pricey.

Back in 2000, I had flames added to my truck and by the time I and my buddy finished we had a week into the prep, paint, and rubbing out to finish. I paid $2000.00 for his help and the paint, but that was just the front end of my already painted truck.
