MSD Blaster coil???

Does anyone know if there is a way to test a MSD Blaster Coil to verify if it's working? There is a black, orange, and red wire in pigtail from dist. I ran my own ignition wire and ground. NO SPARK.. Maybe I have wires on wrong terminal or something? Never had MSD Ignition before. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Re: MSD Blaster coil???

If the coil is hooked up to the truck disconnect the wire from the center of the distributor (the one that the coil uses to send voltage to the distributor) and set it down on the engine so that it will be able to ground itself and have someone turn the engine over and (it's easier if it's dark so you can see the spark) if you see a spark it works.

I think some auto parts stores test them and even though it's MSD it would be no different checking it that any other coil.

If you don't want to do the above there is a way to check it at home but it will entale a little more work. I'm really bad at writing and I don't think you would be able to follow what I write (not cuz you're dumb but because of me) but if you absolutely must try it PM or reply and i'll give it a shot.

EDIT:
I just reread your post and was wondering do you have the entire ignition system from MSD (box, coil, distributor ) cuz if so the the wires coming from the distributor go to the box and the box hooks to the coil. Let me know what you have and I can help you better.

Re: MSD Blaster coil???

Well, let me ask you guys this. This MSD 8474 kit is supposed to replace an existing GM HEI distributor. My 72 Jimmy was points ignition, was I supposed to buy the MSD Series 6 ignition control box too?

Re: MSD Blaster coil???

If you buy that you don't need the box, you just have to run a new ignition wire to it and that takes about ten minutes.
