What's it like driving a powerglide??

I was wondering what it's like to drive a 60-66 truck with a powerglide? I've driven trucks that had 3-speed automatics like TH-350s and TH-400s, but never something with only 2 speeds. Reason I'm asking is that I found a good used Chevy 307with a Powerglide transmission, and I was wondering if anybody could give me a description of the experience.

It's a DOG.. It winds out and there are only a couple of spots it has pick up & go. Plus, there is only one shift point..

Take the 307, then look for a th350 or 700 or 400. Anything except a Powerglide.

It depends on the powerplant. With only 2 gears, a high torque engine is needed to make it scoot. The PG was a decent tranny in it's day. I would prefer a th350, far better box. But if I had a PG, I would beef up the bands and clutches. Dad had a 63 wagon with 327 and pg. Towed a teardrop trailer all over with it. Didn't have any problems with it until my sister and I started abusing it. It would do a one wheel burnout for a full city block and got 18 mpg.

People either love it or hate it....me, I hate the s.o.b. lol, but at the sametime it all depends on your style of driving or purpose of the truck. A lot of drag guys live and die behind a well built PG, and cruiser guys loooove it cause well, thats just what it is. I personally feel that if your going to use your truck as a daily driver and also hit the freeways you need the 3spd trans. As mentioned above, the PG winds out fast on top end and theres only certain spots in powerband or gearing where it actually feels "fun" to drive....

The vair has a pg, being so light it would get up and go in most situations, shift points are kinda weird, but I don't know if I would like it in a truck. If you have to have an auto, just stick w/ a TH350.

I totally agree... I have a PG in my '64 truck and one in my "55 Chevy Sedan, 235 engine.. It's fine for the car and I like cruising in it. But the truck with a 350 and a PG..... I just don't like it..

I would like to try a th350 in the truck.

I had a 64 Impala wagon with a PG...I loved it. It worked great.

I loved the fact you could push-start the darn thing (of course you would have to push it up to like 40 MPH )

i have a 66 with 250 6 cyl 2 sp powerglide i dont tow or haul with the truck just cruise it has a 373 rear end gear as well i have no problem with power lag anywhere it accelerates fine and will do 80mph at a comfortable rpm
