Post Trans troubles not good

While driving home from work my trans started to makeing a grinding noise and then it would stop but every once in a while I would here a thumping noisefrom under the truck. I got under the truck and to my suprise there isn't a cross member (repeat NO CROSS MEMBER) its a mannual trans 4spd with a granny gear. I really dont know what to do. I started looking in the paper for trannies. What will fit in our trucks?
(700r4?, th400, m22) and how much trouble will it take to put them in? And back to the start where do I find a cross member for my truck.
(1970 GMC 350 sb, dana 60 rear end with 4.11 gears.)
please help me this is a daly driver truck!!!

4 speed are too short for a crossmember they are only 12" long trannies, the crossmemeber is under the bellhousing, the Ch465 trannies are very common wer ein alot of trucks of all kinds for over 20 years, since 1968
