Need help with oil leak

I have an oil leak at the front passenger side of the engine. I degreased the area originally thinking it was coming from the gasket around the oil pump which now I can see looks dry. Even the bolts look dry. After some further reading on the boards I checked the bolt screwed in through the side of the block next to the oil pump and they are dry. The only thing I can see that maybe leaking is where the bowl of the fuel pump crimps to the pump. Never seen that before and wasn’t sure if it was possible. I have included pics and marked them to show where it is dry, (pic 2 and around the gasket in pic 3) what I see underneath and the crimp on the pump (pic 4, can it leak here??) that had some oil on it. Also, valve cover gaskets, head gaskets and timing chain are all dry.
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Need help with oil leak

Are you sure it's not tranny fluid from a loose connection on the rad? It just looked a little red to me.

Re: Need help with oil leak

They can leak from the crimp between the bowl and the pump body as you described. Not real common but it is possible. I have seen it when running a stock pump as this in high rpm circle track applications more than on street engines.

Isn't there supposed to be a bolt in these 2 holes?

Re: Need help with oil leak

Kinda hasd my dioriented by looking at the camera angles. The lower hole is not important. No oil there but the upper hole should have a bolt in there for sure. Theis is the one that will hold up the pumpshaft when changing the pump. JUST REMEMBER short bolt not too long. If it is to long it will contact the pump shaft and you DO NOT want that. The shaft has a tight fit so not alot of oil will come out there but I will say there will be a leak.

Re: Need help with oil leak

Ok guys I just went out with the mirror and flashlight and checked both holes. both are dry and clean. I know the motor was apart for a refresh a few years back, could someone have sealed something inside?(400BB if it matters) I will gladly put a bolt back in the top hole. anyone know where I can find what size and length I need? and If I replace the fuel pump should I just go to napa and order one or get a HP from summit?
Thanks for the help.

Re: Need help with oil leak

Ahhh...I seee Ya know I was thinking small block. I even went out and checked to be 100% on a SBC that I had here because of the weird camera angle. I'm not real sure on the upper hole on the 402. I can check later if no one else chimes in.

Re: Need help with oil leak

Oppps1 Forgot I dont really see a NEED to go high dollar on the pump. Your local parts store pump should be fine IMO. If you would want a better pump I have use the carter race pumps alot and I will use them again. They are rebuildable also. I am thinking the last one I bought was in the 50 to 60 dollar range. I will check.

Re: Need help with oil leak

Look at the hoses in the very first picture; some kind of oil is draining down them. Could you trace that.

Re: Need help with oil leak

Just checked a 402 block, it does NOT require a bolt in either hole. Both are blind tapped. Check the pipe plug under the fuel pump. That is where the push rod goes through.

Re: Need help with oil leak

Thanks guys for the info, and I just double checked the pipe plug under the pump mount and its dry and clean. as far as the oil on the lines in the first pic, thats what had me tweaked in the first place being those are fuel and radiator hoses. I have a feeling its leaking from the crimp where the bowl mounts to the housing. I had never seen this before and as RACINJASON22 seems to confirm its rare. must be all that Racing I do in the big oval back and fourth to work. I think I will go the new fuel pump route and while its apart degrease the whole area and double check. at least its not a bad leak and I check the oil daily to make sure. so I will get a new pump and get it on in the next week or so.

Thanks again for all the help.
