Cam decision…
I talked to Lunaiti today and think I’m going to use the Voodoo series cam in my truck.
Any one use one? Cableguy0 recommended using the voodoo cams. The person suggested the 60101 or the 60102. the 02 is the same as comp cams 262. What do you think> s/t

Re: Cam decision…
I have never personally used one but, I hear good things and I really checked them out spec wise. I say they seem to be a real good choice IMO. I plan on trying them out on my next build if that means anything to ya. Just personal opinion.

Re: Cam decision…
Keep in mind that what makes the Vodoo cams superior is the tremendous amount of lift they obtain over a given duration vs. other cams. With that in mind both of those cams are likely to have too much lift for a stock valve train. Stock Vortec's can't handle over .600" lift, older heads are less I believe. I don't have any experience dealing with valve clearance issues in older heads but I think you can install new valves with long enough stems. Because of the high lift in my Comp Cam I had longer than stock valve stems installed in my Pro Lightining heads. If lift is not a problem I'd probably go for the bigger cam. But be sure to find out what you will have to do to accomodate the lift first.

Re: Cam decision…
I talked to the tech support and told him everything I wanted in a cam. Those were his recommendations. He didn’t say anything about too much lift with my stock cast-iron heads, but he did mention about cam to rod clearance on the stroker.
I’m thinking going with the bigger one, but what do you guys think? Opinions welcomed! s/t

Re: Cam decision…
I`d say gobig. But,I really like the 1,000-5,500 rpm range of the smaller one. This gets into transmission/convertor set-up.I like the power at just off idle for street.

Re: Cam decision…
Old Yeller's right in that we need more information. With either, you need to take a hard look at your valvetrain for clearances and suitability. What HP level are you shooting for?

Re: Cam decision…
I don’t have a HP goal per se, just want something that wont get embarrassed on the street w/out making my mileage go into the toilet.
I’ll call and re-confirm the valve issue this AM. Thanks. s/t

Re: Cam decision…
Ok, I talked to Lunati, Summit tech. & my engine builder (he’s not much help)
The guy at Lunati suggested the 60101 with the option of the bigger 60102. He thinks the smaller one would be better suited for economy making it more drivable. The larger ~102 making more hp towards the top. He suggested to make sure the valves wont bind with its lift, and to make sure I had strong springs (roller rockers were suggested). I talked to the engine guy and he said that .500 ~.520 lift wouldn’t be a problem with the Z-28 springs & that’s not much lift in his opinion. I asked what size of cam he recommends and he said he see allot of comp 262 & 272’s. which is allot more lift. Summit tech support compared the two above Lunati cams with comp cams 262 & 272 (which he couldn’t find the 272 BTW). He seemed to think I would be happier with the Lunati ~102 & the comp cams mentioned would be too big. So, what is your experience with cams? RJ22 – you said you compared the numbers. What did you see that you liked about the Lunati?? Is it really small, and what makes it desirable? s/t

Re: Cam decision…
I have been pretty happy with my XE262 for over 3 years. I would probably try the Voodoo next time because I hear good things about them. Get the recommended valve springs for the cam.

Re: Cam decision…
I found this while searching for cam info. This guy is building a 383 and is talking about using the Voodoo 60102 cam. This article is pretty good (the cam info starts on page 3)
Here’s the link. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/383-...n-62969-3.html The Voodoo cam sounds like it’s the one I want. s/t

Re: Cam decision…
Still having computer trobles but, I'm boarded wathing thing load dial-up
I really have a hard time explaining things wording things some times. I also tend to go a little bigger in cam selection than most so when I recommend something some people say huh?? I have experienced it here on this board already It's just the way I am. I like to turn em' up. Any way I read alot of that thread while waiting s/t, There is alot of good reading there and some amusing stuff also back and fourth IMO don't pay atention to some of it specialy the parts where some are cutting up the 383. I personally would build one over a stock stroke 350 anyday. Here's another good read for ya and whom ever else may be interested. BTW I would go with the 60102 myself for your application. Personal opinion again.

If money were no object though, I'd go hydraulic roller cam and lifters. The lift curve profile available with a roller cam is optimized to deliver better performance for a given duration while not destroying the engine's low end "manners". Dunno what Lunati offers, but Comp has some cam profiling s/w available for about $30 to $40 I think. You plug in your engine specs and select a cam (one of theirs of course) and it'll draw the graph for you and give you peak and average torque and HP. That kind of comparison can be helpful for the decision you're facing. Good luck.

Sport/Truck: Since you're looking for opinions, I have the Comp XE-262 cam in my 454 (roughly equal you say to the Lunati 102). Granted, the #262 in a SBC will behave differently than in a BBC because of the cylinder volume to fill (apples to oranges comparison?), but for my personal tastes it's not quite aggressive enough. However, above 4000 RPMs it really "sings". Below that it's very streetable. It rumbles a little (just enough to let you know it's not stock), has decent stoplight idling and low RPM manners and gets decent fuel mileage (12MPG Crusing mostly @ 65-70MPH w/TH700 and 3.55's out back. Closer to 10MPG in town). (I call that decent because I only drive it on weekends when I want to play haulass). If money were no object though, I'd go hydraulic roller cam and lifters.
