Which Alternator
On my 71 C 10 I want to go with a 1 wire alternator and the problem I am facing is the housing size and my custom brackets. The brackets are good with the 3 wire but the only alternator my parts guy could come up with was a 66 amp and that won't be enough. I would like to be 95 amps +.

On my 71 I have a single wire 66 amp approx. alternator--updated to the 100 amp single wire alternator and the brackets are the same. Do you want to buy some brackets to fit the single wire alternator, I have some? I would've thought the brackets would be the same regardless of 1 wire/3 wire! What do you need the bigger alternator for?

Killer , the bracket I bought is kind hard to explain but here goes.. The adjusting arm is sorta like your hand where your thumb hooks the bottom of the housing and your index finger has the adjusting slot. I have a 120 amp alt and it is to big and my thinking on more amps is due to AC ,lights and and motor with 10.5 cr.
Even the adjusting bolt is to large. |

O.K. Do this--check out the recent "vintage air" thread and look at my alternator--it's 100 amp and I used the same bracket! What brand is that 120 amp?

BTW what is 10.5 cr? Anyways i'm not sure but i do know if you have the factory brackets and the delco is correct replacement it should fit. Can you get some pictures possibly? If you wanted to compare measurements from bolt hole to bolt hole on the alternator I'm game. Let me know!

Dunno if this will help since I don't know what case style alternator you're working with....
http://www.americanautowire.com/prod...rsion_Kits.cfm These allow you to convert from externally regulated to CS (86+) and SI (73-85) style rigs.... Also, as I understand it, the "1 wire" alternators use a "self exciting" regulator. My chrome SI style alternator (95amp) is on a UPS truck heading in this direction, but the sales/tech guy said I could use it as a one wire because it had the S.E. regulator, or I could plug in my regulator harness (since it'll be converted to the 73-85 style at install time). |

Since i cant see your set up i'm just trying to determine if the custom bracket is correct for an alternator specific for your truck or if you have the wrong alternator. If he 3 wire alternator was original or if you know it is specific for your truck and if you know the custom bracket is specific for your truck, then i would say the 120 amp alt. isn't the correct fit. Are the bolt spaces the same for the 3 wire as it is for the 120 amp?

Sorry for the confusion , the brackets are specific for the 71 with short water pump and with the stock alternator life is good but... the only one wire alt I found was only 66 amps that is the same physical frame size on the alternator. I realize the factory GM brackets will handle the larger size alt such as the 120. I also can't find on the stock 3-wire what amp it is and realize you can only fit so much shut in a original frame when they make it internally regulated.
So the question should have been... Does someone know if there is a 71 stock size 1 wire alternator that is more than 66 amps? One is SI and the later is CS I believe , and that determines physical size. |

Stock as in from the factory was approx- 63-66 amps from what i've read. But there are aftermarket alternators such as the one I have 100 amps that fit the original brackets. Make sense!

I use the cs130 from a 95-97 Caddy. I dont have any mounting issues. They bolt up just as the stock alternator did. Just have to do some minor wiring changes.VERY EASY!!!
-Lance Naturally I changed the pulley, but here's a mock up pic-short w/p and stock brackets.BTW it's 120 amps.
