ROAD TRIP!!! (and a pos parts truck too!)
Anyone wanna place bets on this?
Sunday morning, I plan on hopping in the tow rig (never called it that before) armed with a tow bar, a hand full of tools, and head over to Dayton Ohio, which, granted, is only 60 miles away, but with this untested engine, it's a bit of a roll of the dice. The plan is to hook up with Biff's brother in law (i think that's the relation) and buy an old POS 69 short step for not much green. Your typical barn find, been sitting there for 11 years, a former inline/3 speed truck, now has the remains of a 327 and Th350... engine blew and was semi disasembled 11 years ago... and has done nothing but collected dust, and probably rat poop. Would you believe the tires still have air? Will it be another project to constantly install junk yard motors into? Will it go into storage for another 11 years untill i can get to it? Probably not. I'll part this sucker out as fast as I can... although, I think I'll keep the rear fenders...I've been thinking of going daulie on my longhorn one day. Pics to follow this evening...hopefully booring uneventfull photos... but I'm sure SOMETHING will happen though. Tail lights and tire smoke... I'm westbound and down Last edited by Longhorn Man; 04-15-2007 at 08:45 AM. |

Re: ROAD TRIP!!! (and a pos parts truck too!)
thanks for the link biff, I was in too much of a hurry when i started this thread.
Lets throw in another level of difficulty into this recipe for disaster... I JUST got home from the shop... was there for 24 hrs, although, I did take a 2 hr nap. I just hope I don't get blinded by a short step... always wanted one, I have always thought they they were sexy. Watch me go and slap an engine in there or something stupid like that. Anyone wanna guess how many empty cans of mtn dew will be on the passenger floorboard by the time I roll back into Columbus? Last edited by Longhorn Man; 04-15-2007 at 08:43 AM. |

Re: ROAD TRIP!!! (and a pos parts truck too!)
well, I'm back... no real pics... the truck was like... WAY gone. Total bummer.
I found the MAJOR draw back to a tow bar... the truck has to be able ROLL! This sucker had a locked up wheel, and even if I did bust that wheel loose, the ball joints and tie rod ends were so loose, I wondered if it would make it to columbus. The frame isn't rusted through, but... VERY pitted, and a bent passenger front bumper mount. There were some cool parts, and a few I would LOVE to have for my rig... but, it just isn't gonna happen. Had only one minor issue with the longhorn... the oil pump has been leaking, so I tightened it last night and ran it a while, seemed good so i ran it. Well, I was foggin for bugs on the way back. However, on the good side, I did manage to get 12.5 MPG keeping it at a steady 65 - 70 MPH. That ain't too shabby for a 4.10 geared 5000 pound heap blasting down the freeway. |

Re: ROAD TRIP!!! (and a pos parts truck too!)
Those kinds of trips are what trailers and low ball offers are for. You made the trip, so offer him like $50 for the truck, and take it home, this way you are not 100% on the loosing end of the deal. This way you have a truck to part out, and make back at least some of your money... Flat towing stuff outta fields is bad news. You can flip that truck and yours if the situation is right.

Re: ROAD TRIP!!! (and a pos parts truck too!)
Glad you made it home on the same day you left. I take my trailer after drivers. I don't take no chances. (I know it helps to have a trailer)

Re: ROAD TRIP!!! (and a pos parts truck too!)
DANG...I was looking forward to some great pics and a story to match! I've seen some that I would not take home for free...seems hard to believe but sometimes they are not even worth the scrap fee.
