Starter's actin' funny
Starter is two months old, only started a couple of times a week since. Tonight I noticed it "clicks" like it is on a high compression stroke, starts after 2-5 tries.
Not a flywheel problem, I don't think, not a clanking, but a clicking !! lol Diagnosis please Doc !!! Steve ------------------ '70 jimmy 4x4 '98 chevy zr2 (the misses' transpo) '65 stang '81 shovelhead contact me: email--showme219@aol.com

Check all your connections on the starter and battery make sure they are all tight. I had a loose wire on the starter and it did the same thing. I have also had a loose connection on the battery and it did the same thing.

I'll quote my college automotive electrical instructor "The most overlooked portion of an electrical circuit is the ground"

Usually the starter either works or doesn't. I would clean and tighten the battery connections first, then the battery ground wire to the block at the block. Then see what happens. Next would be the connections at the starter. Good luck---Huck

Sounds like the contacts within the solenoid to me. If you remove the starter then remove the solenoid you can take the solenoid apart and rotate the contact points 180 degrees to give it a fresh contact area. It's worth a try before you spend $. While you have it apart, remove the two bolts holding the back side of the starter and slide off the back cover to examine the brushes, if they are way down you may consider replacing those also.
On second thought,,,, two months old? Screw it,, return it! ------------------ 1971 C10 swb stepside 350/700R4/3.73posi Killingworth, Connecticut [This message has been edited by Gordo (edited April 25, 2002).]

I was a bad ground at the battery !
DAHHHHHHHH !! All is well. Also, I had posted a question back in January asking why I couldn't shut the engine off while the headlights were on ! Longhornmail expertly stated, "switch the orange and pink wires" wow ! is that guy sharp ! Problem was, I JUST found the two wires tonight (the Walmart undercoating finally wore-off enough for me to tell what was what !) Thanks guys !!! ------------------ '70 jimmy 4x4 '98 chevy zr2 (the misses' transpo) '65 stang '81 shovelhead contact me: email--showme219@aol.com

The wires are located on the firewall, they come thru the firewall to the right of the master cylinder, on my truck, both wires run in the same loom. They appear to be the same size.
I believe one is the starter supply, the other a main power supply to the fuse box. I am not clear that that is the exact routing for the wires... but it kinda' explains MY particular problem. I will investigate further and start a new thread when I get the right details..... ------------------ '70 jimmy 4x4 '98 chevy zr2 (the misses' transpo) '65 stang '81 shovelhead contact me: email--showme219@aol.com
