WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
OK, So I saved the motor, cab, and clip from an original 67 GMC. I have it listed for around $250. I figured that someone would love to have the clip.
So how much is this motor really worth?

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
Is it a Chevy 348 or a Pontiac 347? GMC's came with pontiac 347s, but I'm not sure if a 67 would have that. I know earlier ones would.
348's are in more demand as 409's disappear. A good complete 348 might bring $1200-$1500.

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
67 wouldn't have a pontiac engine... I think that was only in the 60 - 66 models.

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
one thing you could do is look at the prices of 409s and look at the shape of them for the price, then look at your 348 and base a price from there

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
I had one dealt for for $175 about 8 years ago (chevy 348 with 3 deuces), but the guy sold it before I could get down there to pick it up. He said it ran, but smoked, had no stats on compression or oil pressure.

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
The 348 was introduced in 1958, the 409 in 1961. the 348 fell by the wayside after the 409 was introduced. February 1965 was the latest a 409 could be had in a new chevy. After that the 396 took its place.
As far as what is in your truck, try to get a pic and post it here. There is no telling what some PO has shoehorned in there in the last 40 years. You can't mistake a 348/409. Those valve covers are like nothing else. I've had a few come through the shop over the years. I sold my last 348 about 6 months ago. here is a pic of a 409:

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
It was in a rusted out 4 door sedan, not running, and it sold (car carcass and all) for $800 and change on that large unmentionable online flea market.

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
If it's not a custom truck I doubt someone went to the trouble to swap in a 348, but who knows? 348's are heavy engines and would need different motor mounts, etc. to work.
348's and 409's are identical from the outside. The only way to tell them apart are casting numbers, or by looking at the end of the crank. They had dipsticks on opposite sides, but the oil pans (which the dipstick comes out of) are interchangeable, so that's not a reliable way to tell. The 348 or 409 is easily recognizable by its "W" head and valve cover, as mentioned before. 409's are a victim of scarcity and Barrett-Jackson Syndrome. These days you are lucky to touch a complete, running 409 for less than $4000, and that's a low performance one. The highest performance 409's can bring upwards of $12,000 in restored condition. 348's are identical with a smaller bore, so more and more people are looking at them to "clone" into 409's. They are also popular in street rods for their distinctive "look". A picture would instantly reveal whether you have a 348 or not, although if you do have a "W" block in a 67 vehicle you might want to check to see if it is a 409.

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
These are off a 305(they thought they were economical back then ) :
Here`s a 305: This is a 409/348 "W" head:

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
The GMC V6's and 348/409 Chevys may look a lot alike, but the GMC V6 is a completely different breed of animal. They are not a 349/409 with 2 cyls. cut off.

Re: WIW 348 GMC Big Block w/ Power Steering
Too lazy to look it up, but I believe that was the most common factory finish for the valve covers on that particular engine.
Also, I think there was a rare 12 cylinder version of that 305 that was basically 2 blocks welded together, again from the factory.
