thinking about cutting a coil

alright, well the front of my truck is still to high for my tastes.

i've got 3" djm spindles and 1.5" western chassis coils up there. there is about 1 1 1/4" gap between my tires and the fender well. i figure if i cut 1 full coil off the springs it would bring it down just about perfect.

i'm running doetsch tech shocks on it with 255/50/17" tires


would cutting 1 coil out affect the handle enough for me to not want to do it?

Why don't you add adjustable air shocks for the rear? My brother did that with his 94. The air shocks allowed adjustment for heavy weight and bed use. Weak leafs can be a problem too.

suggestion? ummm...just buy 2.5" coils bro...then you dont have to worry about a massive reprocussion...coils are built to be what you buy them for, cutting them is not recommended...I'll leave it at that...

people have been cutting coils for years.it was once the only way,there were no lowering kits.does it affect ride?in my opinion yes,a little bit.not enough to overide the cool factor for me.that's just me.that being said.i agree a manufactured lowering coil is a better way to go but, cutting is free."free is a very good price" . if you like that look after you cut and are unhappy with the ride,measure the spring and get a new one that matches.bad part is, you end up doing it twice.here's a few pic's of my front with 3 in drop spindles and a 1 inch drop coil.only difference with mine is tire height,i'm about an inch lower on the tires.it just tucks and gives rake with the rear setup i have.

If you don't cut off more than a full coil it won't effect it that much. Cutting off enough to get more than about 1.5" of drop, will.

i have atleast 1" of wheel gap and i'm running 3" spindles and 1.5" coils, so i SHOULD be lower then you

just 2" or 3" drop coils i got mine for $75 at summit!

Eric I think you know I am not opposed to cutting coils. I know that you are anal about your truck, so I would suggest you get a 2" coil and sell your 1.5".

I think one coil might give you more than you want, then you have a cut up spring and still need to make an adjustment.

i had cheap drop coils (shAIM, but i didn't buy them!!!) and one set an inch lower than the other. i cut the other one to match, taking out 1/4 coil at a time and putting it back to see how much it got me, just to be safe. ended up cutting one full coil. the ride wasn't unbearable, i actually thought it was pretty smooth. the only problem was that i would bottom out hard on my inner fenders with any bump...i don't think i had more than 2" between the tire and inner fender though...

1 cut coil will give you a 2" drop, cut 2 coils off to get my 4" drop

You should only cut a 1/2 a coil at a time on drop springs because they are allready lower......ask me how I know?

i dont understand why mine is still as high as it is in the front

Stock coils cut one coil off is about 2" depending on condition. Lowering coils should only be cut a 1/4 or half at a time. They drop quick! Buy yourself another set and sell those...
