Two sets of mufflers?? Will it work?
My 69 GMC 1/2 ton I am attempting to get on the raod is quite loud and I would like to make it quieter for driving around town.
The truck has a 350 with header and dual exhaust. Both collector gaskets were leaking and fixing them has made it quieter, but still loud. The exhaust systems seems to be in good shape, no holes and covered in surface rust. It has mufflers, but what I would call blue bottles or cherry bombs. The mufflers are 17 inches long and about 3.5 or 4 inches in diameter. I think they were meant to flow and make noise. The mufflers are located over the rear axle. What I am wondering about is cutting the pipes in front of the current mufflers and installing a second set of mufflers. Therefore running two mufflers on each side. Will this harm anything? Any suggestions?

why not just buy better mufflers and replace the ones you have

Shane said what I was thinking but to answer your question NO it won't hurt anything. Specially when the set on there are basiclly, just probably pipes with baffles on the outside normall glasspack design that provide very little to No back pressuer in the first place.

Re: Two sets of mufflers?? Will it work?
old caddys and lincolns used to run dual mufflers on each pipe// but i do agree with the rest theres no reason a good turbo type muffler should keep a mild 350 quiet enough

What type/models of magnaflows did you use?

Re: Two sets of mufflers?? Will it work?
One of the reasons I am looking to not replace mufflers is the location and size of the current ones. They seem short at 17 inches long and because the pipes bend up and over the rearend I don't think going to longer ones will be easy.
I guess if I could find replacements that would fit in where the old ones are I would do that, but I have looked online at Summit Racing and haven't found any that seem even close in size. Under the middle of the truck there is a long stretch of straight pipe and I thought it would be easy to buy a set of generic mufflers and cut the pipe and install!
