Lightbulb 454/4 spd truck

anybody got any? talk about cool factor. im thinking about building my own given the 4 spd parts trucks available in my area. everyone loves the 454/4 spd combo in the cars so what about in a street truck? think this would do anything for overall value?

Re: 454/4 spd truck

Count me in! I have a 454 and a muncie 4 speed in my truck. Be aware that if you are thinking about doing this you will probably have to fab up your own clutch linkage. Big block 4 speed parts trucks are almost non-existent. I made a my z-bar from a small block one by sectioning it and making a new arm for it (pictured below) I also fabbed up a steel plate with the pivot ball on it that mounts to the block. It was worth the effort- its very fun to drive. If you need any more info on this just let me know. -russ

I'll give you all the 3 speed stuff off my truck, Z-bar, brackets, I don't know if the cross member would work, but you can have that too. I'm only a half hour at the most from ya.

Re: 454/4 spd truck

Keep in mind that if you use a truck 4-speed it will be pretty hard and slow to shift. You won't be able to bang through the gears like you can with a car 4-speed...the same engine with an automatic transmission would be quicker because you aren't going to have to slowly shift the transmission.

Re: 454/4 spd truck

The Muncies would use the 3spd linkage.
Value?I wouldn`t do it for that.

i wouldnt be doing it FOR the value i was just asking if it would make the value of the truck any higher as far as rarity goes. rare = cool!

There's no rarity in a modified truck.

not factory rarity just rarity in general, i dont see many people building 454/4 spd trucks... yet everyone and their uncle are cloning the mess out of the big block/4 spd cars. any thoughts?

I see where you are going with this. I'm building my truck into a "Yenko S/T" 427 with an M21 4-speed and 12 bolt posi. Everything will look as close to factory built as possible, what Chevrolet would have produced had they put one out in '68.

I just responded to your other post about parts- asking about the stuff for a stick conversion... now I see you have already done it. I want the muncie 4 speed like in the old Chevelles [I had a 66- sweetest car I ever owned]
Will the stick stuff from a truck work with the muncie? The swing pedal, linkage, Bell Housing, all that?
Don't know about the value to anyone elsed but I thiunk the big block muscle truck ROCK!
Just ordered a line lock for my 69 GMC SWB 396.....

Re: 454/4 spd truck

The muscle cars were available with 4-on-the-floor.That`s why cloning a factory 4 speed helps the value on those. Not necessarily add dollar value, but gives "WOW" factor and desireability to set off the no BS performance appeal of muscle cars.Especially since most came through with autos. The mindset was towards autos for quicker ETs by the late`60s.
But,since these trucks didn`t come with then,it`s not a clone. It would be just another way to go with modifying.I`m a shifter from day 1 and that`s what I like.People have come around to the cool factor of a 4-on-the-floor and guys are doing what you want to do.I have a friend that only runs 4 speed in everything he owns.I say go for it(you didn`t need that,I know). It won`t hurt it,that`s for way damn sure.

Re: 454/4 spd truck

I'm building a 454 to make 500 hp right now but it'll be dragging the ol' 400 behind it - I want to drink my coffee and smoke while I'm cruising (getting old - hahah) All the leg lifts and arm motion are for the gym and I quit going to the gym when they took all the ashtrays off the stairmasters!

Different strokes...If there`s a will, there`s a way.I can do all that and drive a stick. When the effort to lift a leg to push a clutch pedal and move my arm up and down to shift get`s to be too much, someone please shoot me.I can drink coffee while I ride my Harley.I never have smoked...tobacco.

Not to hijack the thread but I had a '67 short step years ago with a six cyl. and muncie 4 speed, & it was a column shift. Anything can be done.....
