Plastic door panels ?

Anyone used the repro panels? My truck has the scroll design, and I was thinking about getting these plastic replacements. Just curious on how they would hold up...fading, etc. If they're junk, I may just go the the plain metal panel, since I want black anyway. Thanks, sb

Re: Plastic door panels ?

Will probably go w/ the plain jane metal panels, but was curious how the plastic ones held up to daily driving abuse. The only reason I'd consider these is to still have the scroll pattern and not have to deal w/ vinyl.

Re: Plastic door panels ?

I'm pretty sure most of the vendors have the plain metal ones but they're for 67-71. I guess the only diff would be to change your window regulator if you wanted them.

My panels are the original embossed vinyl over the metal panels.

GM: Not sure how to post a link, but GMCPauls has the metal for $99 on their website, if you wanted to check 'em out.

Re: Plastic door panels ?

67-71 had metal door panels- either plain or with vinyl covering.
72 was plastic door panels from the factory.

They do make plastic ones with the vinyl over them for the 67-71's but they dont fit very well. Why dont you just recover your originals? or you could just rip the vinyl off and use the metal one under them. The choice is yours.

Re: Plastic door panels ?

I`d never use those cheap imitation plastic panels, personally. They`re Kmart rash,IMHO.Your original vinyl panels held up for many years. Many trucks still have nice originals.Lasting is not an issue, unless you want them to stay new looking for another 30+ years I wouldn`t worry about it.I`d go with original metal ones if durability is your priority. But,most guys look for the nicer interiors in these trucks.`69s are cool because they are the only ones with bowties.

If you think that's cool - the '69 GMC had GMC in the center where the Bowtie was on Chevy's. I got me a set of those.

I am contemplating going back with my metal ones though. Getting kind of tired of the scrolled ones. I wish mine were in mint condition- but the corners are a little worn and where the screws go in.

I have thought of making some nice metal ones as well.

itd be cool to make your own panels, the flat ones would be easier but the 72 ones wouldnt be to hard as long as you have the skills

Re: Plastic door panels ?

If you have the original vinyl panels for`69 they had the scroll all the way around the edge with a break in the top center with a sowtie embossed. The 70/71 panels have the woodgrain strip across the top.If your truck doesn`t have the custom confort and convenience package then it came, originally, with metal panels. That package was on the Customs and CSTs,not the "C" models.Do you have chrome window trim, knobs with aluminum inserts,or door jamb switches for your dome lamp?

Re: Plastic door panels ?

I have the custom comf package. Alum insert knobs. These panels w scroll look original, and are the correct style for 69 (minus the bowtie). Just wondering if Chevy changed in the beginning or toward the end of prod run for the 69.

I installed repo plastics about 4 years ago in mine, they look as good as the day I put them in.

Re: Plastic door panels ?

Hmmm...so your originals have no woodgrain, scroll all around the outer edge, and no bowtie? If that`s what you`re saying,I don`t know what the deal is...mid year change or different models?Yours has the option listed on the VIN-spec sheet and you have the chrome window trim?

Re: Plastic door panels ?

I don't have the chrome trim around the windows, PO(s) may have removed at some time in the past?? But yes, custom comfy is listed on the spid, and my glovebox has the 3 holes for the custom badge. Can we tell approx when the truck was made based on the VIN? Maybe LHMan or someone has rough production numbers for 69?

Re: Plastic door panels ?

Hey wibilly,How about your serial #s?Which one has the higher serial number?

As far as what part of year it was built. For one thing, the serial number tells where in line it was made.I mean if your last numbers are high it was late,if they`re low...
I don`t know everything about your truck`s nitty gritty. But,I don`t know why the p.o. would change out the wing vent assemblies to put the plain ones in.But,it`s easy to switch glovebox doors. Is that original painted? Is the whole interior original paint? Is the truck painted in the original color? Is the VIN-plate on the door jamb on with original star rivets?Could the doors have been swapped?
Not trying to pick your truck apart.I`m just curious and trying to learn something about these`69 door panels.PM Longhornman and spark him.

Re: Plastic door panels ?

vent window are chrome; don't have chrome trim around windshield, etc. Cab plate, spid, frame vin all match. Truck has been painted, but everywhere I can see hints of the original light green (olive) whether on doors, firewall, glovebox, fenders, tailgate, etc. I have no doubt that everything is original here based on what I've seen.
