Red face broken bell housing

A freind of mine has a '69 C-10 with
a 454 and a power glide. It has broken the
bell housing on 3 transmissions. I havn't seen the truck, so I am basing my info on what he is telling me.
Is a 454 too much for a powerglide? The only thing I can think of would be the engine
is lifting up on accelleration and the bellhousing is hitting the cab causing it to break!
Thanks for any help!
