How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

There is the obvious one in the far rear of the bed, but how many other cross sills are required for a short fleet wood floor? And since there are two different heigths, how many of each of those? Anyone have a pic of their floor showing all of the cross sills?

TIA!
Bob

Talking Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

starting at the rear you have the main cross brace , then you have a large cross sill then the shorter cross sill the two more large ones , a total of 4 sill's 3 large 1 small and the main rear crossmember , from memory but I think thats correct

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

You need four. The big one in the rear and the three that support the wood. There is a opional reinforcing strip that is recomended if your going to haul heavy items.

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

If your going from steel to wood isn't the front header also required? Aren't the sills also turned upside down?

If youv'e already got a wood bed you already know this so don't pay any attention to me.LOL

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

I have already cut my rear sill out in this pic (large one) My reinforcement strip in front of wheel wells is rotted and the PO added that large steel plate over the axle for extra reinforcement...

1,2,3 same cross sill bolt to frame
RS - reinforcement strip -long and doesn't bolt to frame
rear main cross sill - holds back of bed and wiring harnass

I called MAR-K because their examples are a little confusing. I think that you could add the short reinforcement strip just behind the wheel wells? Since mine has a 1/4" piece of steel added then I only purchased the long stip from them. The front panel is different than a steel floor as well.

Hope this works...
Mike

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

RustyParts, I'll just ignore ya then!

Thanks for that picture Mike! It's an all new bed, meant for a wood floor. I've never seen a good pic or had a good description of where they go. Since I doubt I will ever haul anything heavier than a cooler, so I don't guess I will need all the extra strips. I will need to notch the rear sill (not the main one) to clear the Blazer tank.

Thanks agagin guys!

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

BTW Bob, along as we're talking beds, the bed on the wife's truck is 3/4'' from the cab now that it's secured. I forgot you asked awhile back.

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

I have to notch #3 as well due to a Blazer tank install. Hope that it helped, I can search for more if need be. I would guess that mine was all original since nothing was salvageable!

Luckily I found a complete set of all 4 sills and strips at Carlisle last year for $120.

This is good info. The almighty LMC reference bible just lists A/R(as required).Real helpful.I guess your s`posed to ask their operators...yeah right. They must want you to over order to move move volumn or under order so they can make more off shipping.

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

Thanks Chris!

OK, sounds like I am good to go then. I think I will look into using one of the thinner ones over the gas tank, then make some mounts to fill the gap between the thinner sill and the frame. I have the thinner one over the gas tank right now, tied together between the back side of the wheel tubs, and it clears the tank.

Thanks, GMCPaul. Do you know the location of the two reinforcing strips?

Re: How many cross sills for a fleetside wood floor?

72" at leading edge of wheel tubs and the 49.5"is about 1/2way maybe 2/3rds the way from back of rear wheel tubs.
