small window to big window?
im new to this site and im usually on the 47-59 board as i currently have a 55 project . but i used to have a 66 big window step side that got ripped off in 1993 and ive always wanted another (fleetside this time) my question is most of the trucks ive been looking at are small windows . has anyone here ever converted a small to a big? it looks pretty simple since the outline for the big window is already there
thanks in advance for any input brian |

Re: small window to big window?
Greg aka Hilander on this site did this recently on his truck. He used the inner panel off of a big window donor cab, and cut the outer panel out to match the new inner patch panel.
The original small window inner panel needs to be removed, and replaced with the big window panel. David

Re: small window to big window?
Thanks for the mention, Yes I recently went through the coversion. It came out pretty clean, and it wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. If I had it to do over again, I would have butt welded the new panel in right above the light instead of filling in the headliner seam.

Re: small window to big window?
I completed this conversion on my truk a few years ago. My cab had taken a good hit behind the passenger seat and I was attempting to repair the damage.......I am NOT a body guy by any means; Im also not afraid of gettin midevil with it if I have to; know what Im saying!? Anyway.....I realized it would be easier to pull the dent if the panels were not attached at the window; I had also read the article about converting to a big window. Pull out a fresh sawzall blade and cut around the shape on the back of the cab, leaving yourself AT LEAST 1/2"....read that twice if necessary.........I left more!!!!The panels will seperate naturally.........leave material on the insideof the cab long........make 45 degree cuts (roughly)int he corners on the inside of the cab........drill holes for spot welds on the out side panel and then pinch it together with vice grips/clamps, etc. weld the two together creating your new lip for your window gasget..........go inside and patch your corners with sheet metal......I would love to post pics but I am unable. I thought this was easy to do and I love the big window....it also saved me a lot of body work..........start slow and you will figure it out as you go......Jeff
