Who sells pine bedwood kits & wood floor front bed panels?

Hey y'all,
Does anyone know a source for pine bed wood kits? I know there are all kinds of cool woods out there but I am looking for pine like the original floor and dnt want to go through all the milling work.
Also I need a front bed panel or bulkhead for a wood floor bed. I have messed with both and apparently the steel flore panels are different from what I can tell looking at my own.
Any suggestions?????
Thanks, OT

Thumbs down Re: Who sells pine bedwood kits & wood floor front bed panels?

This is really true in this case ........... you get what you pay for. Pine you will save cash no doubt but it is poor quality to say the least. Allot of dealers for this reason have stopped offering it.

esll.

I found a place today in my wonderings that specializes in wood beds also. I haven't seen their web site yet, but he gave me a catalog and it looks like nice stuff.

have you looked at Bruce Horkey's website or the Classic Parts of America? They all have bed floors.

Re: Who sells pine bedwood kits & wood floor front bed panels?

Thanks all for the places to look. Yeah I am going to re use pine since the first boards lasted 35+ tears and I wont be hauling anything that would require anything more than the pine as far as weight not to mention that unlike a lot of these old beds mine is high and dry all the time and never will see adverse weather. For those reasons I will go back to pine.
Thanks again every one!

Re: Who sells pine bedwood kits & wood floor front bed panels?

You might want to know that the original bed was old-growth pine. Very hearty and less needy when it comes to resistance to wear and tear. Old growth wood of most any type in the US is a gonner these days.

The new stuff is very young growth by comparison, so it won't last long at all in the bed [5-6 years] unless you are ready to refinish very often. You will need UV inhibitors, as much as you can get. Pine rots faster than most other woods.

If you stick with Pine, use only PRO-Wood ACQ from Home Depot. The green stuff won't do well as it moves wayyy too much after it dries out. The new wood is much more stable and it costs the same.

If you choose Oak instead you'll have a much more durable bedwood that should last you 10-15 years. White Oak is the best between it and Red oak. Most old barns in the north are made of White Oak, it's as hard as a rock [while Pine is very soft like Cedar].

If you choose untreated Pine, I'd suggest a minimum of 10-12 coats of Spar Urethane Varnish over a stain color...otherwise it will dissengrate quickly...maybe less than 3 years. If you choose this route, be sure you buy Southern Yellow Pine instead of the Spruce/Pine/Fir stuff.

How come I know all this? I am a deckbuilder/furniture maker....I deal with wood everyday [no pun].
