OK, I know this should be easy - but is it ever?

I have finally wired my new ignition switch. I put it in the receptacle, and then realized that the two tangs broke off - boo hoo. Oh well, I'll worry about that later. hmm... hmm... how does this thing go in the dash now?

OK. I think I am missing some pieces. It's a 72 GMC if it matters. I have what is pictured here plus the circular hole in the dash with the three equally spaced slots around the circumference. Is there a piece or two I am missing? Does that rubber piece do anything? Does anyone really know what time it is? Does anyone really care?

I have edited your pic to help with the assembly process.

first things first. Remove the lock cylinder from the switch. put the key in, rotate it to the left, insert a paperclip into the hole releasing the lock, turn further to the left and it will pull out attached to the key. putting the switch in a vise will help this process.

Ok, now for assembly.

Piece #1 is the ignition switch, place the spacer (#2) over the switch, the big end mates with the dash. hold the switch and spacer up on the backside of the dash with one hand, and then screw on the bezel (#3).

at this point all you need to do is tighten the bezel, and reinstall the lock cylinder. also, it usually helps to connect the switch to the harness before you mount to the dash, but not necessary.

Actually, I missed the fact that you have a 72...

The spacer and bezel do not look correct for the 68-72 model pickups. Judging by the pic that bezel (#3) is for a 67. I may be wrong about the spacer (#2) but it looks too shallow.

The instructions i posted are correct for your model year, but the bezel should look like the following.

I think he has the correct spacer but he doesn't have a bezel. I don't know what the rubber piece is for. The bezel is the chrome piece in Brak's pic. I have included a couple of pictures of the assembly apart and together. Be careful screwing the bezel on, it has fine threads and is easy to cross thread.

I think that you guys have the correct idea - I am missing the bezel. Does anyone have one laying around that they could donate to the cause? There are not many boneyards around here, so it's going to e a touch thing to find.

You can get one from about any parts vendor. they are 5 or 6 bucks new. You probably couldn't buy one from a junk yard for that and it will be nice and shiney.....

Yeah, you are probably right... the only problem is that once I do that, I'll want to do the ww bezel and then maybe the headlight switch rod thingie... oh the humanity. Read my signature, and then laugh because I'll have to get the 5 + 8 s&h approved by high command before purchase.

Thanks for the help though... This stuff is hard to figure out when you may have extra or missing parts.

Brak just noticed that you have only 2nd and 4th gears - we should team up - my POS dd only has 1st, 3rd and 5th. I think I just lost 1st though, and reverse ain't so hot either...

If you need a bezel, i have one that's pretty beat up, that you can have for free. it will at least hold you over until you decide to get a new one.

I just got my new one in the mail yesterday - but thank you very much for thinking of it for me.

I have been driving the truck all week, and so far it's been fun having all of the gears you're supposed to have. Hopefully I'll put that bezel in tomorrow when things slow down a bit.

Another related question (sorry to hijack my own thread)

How does the headlight switch mount to the dashboard? I removed the knob (yes, the right way), centered the switch behind the dash, screwed in that nut-like thing and inserted the knob. Works great, except when the headlights are off the knob sticks out like 2-3". Do I have an incorrect knob or am I missing some sort of spacer?

If the headlights go on & off OK I would say that you have the wrong Knob/shaft for the switch.

On mine, from the base of the knob to the end of the shaft is 3"....
