Trying to save a buck
Can I use the ring & pinion, plus the carrier from a 5 lug axle (72), and use it in a 6 lug (68)? Both are 10 bolt. It sure would be a lot cheaper than buying a new setup for the 6 lug, since I have both. I'm trying to use a lower gear. I don't want to go try to create problems, I have enough already. Thanks, TF

If this is your first rear end setup, don't do it yourself.
Changing a gearset requires careful measurements and attention to detail. Cutting corners will cost you your gearset. And your diff if you are unlucky. And with all the tools you need to buy, it won't be cheaper than having a pro do it. |

I will have a pro do the swap. I was just trying to avoid buying a new ring & pinion plus a new carrier if I could use the 5 lug I have. This is definetely out of my leauge. TF

Hey Treefrog, Why don't we see what gear is in the 5-lug rearend and if it is what your looking for just put it in and then change to the orginal hubcaps you have been thinking about running. That way you could still leave the front 6-lug untill you get ready to change it and nobody will never know what is behind the the hubcaps. I have 2-5 lus rims and 2-6 lug rims that you would need. So you would not be out nothing other than the hubcaps. Anyway my buddy said he would have your rearend done in a couple of days so when I go pick it up I will see what gear is in it. Tim
