Help needed: swapping out 292 for a V-8 in a 4x4
Tech question here, not sure if I should post this in the engine, 4x4, or this section....but here it goes....
Have a '69 Suburban 1/2T 4x4 with a 292. I pulled the 292 out, going to get a Big Block.....anyway, the crossmember is angled as the motor mounts are off-set. See pics.....that's a spare 454 block I had laying around for mock-up. The driver's side pretty much lines up, although once heads and V/C's are on it I think it'd be a tight fit. What stuff do I need to swap in the V-8? Are all 4x4 V-8 crossmembers the same??? I assume I'll need motor mounts/towers as well. Any help with this greatly appreciated!!! I plan on getting the parts ASAP....

Re: Help needed: swapping out 292 for a V-8 in a 4x4
So,you want a BBC in your 4x4?Well,some problems people run in to is clearance with the firewall that most people handle with different valve covers, body lifts,or moving all the crossmembers dealing with motor/tranny/t case forward. The 6 cylinders had different motor crossmembers than the sbc V8s.There was no stock BBC in a 4wd in 67-72.The 292s had the crossmember at an angle. All the holes are in the frame for when you convert to the V8 style. No drilling required.I did this with my 71.It had a 292 and now has a mild 350.Just changed the crossmember and bolted it in the right spot.

Re: Help needed: swapping out 292 for a V-8 in a 4x4
Cool...thanks...wouldn't happen to have a pic or two would ya???
But a bolt-in??? I unbolted the pass. side mount from the crossmember and frame and moved it back, the rear hole is off. No big deal I guess. So I can probably just use these and get just the crossmember then..... Gotta have a BB....run 'em in all my rigs.

Re: Help needed: swapping out 292 for a V-8 in a 4x4
The minimum you will need is a V8 crossmember. Some people use the crossmember from the 73-87 4wds for more clearance under the motor. The holes should all be there. You might find they line up once you have the correct crossmember.I dont have a pic with the V8 crossmember installed, but I think I do have a pic of where it should be.Now for clearance,do you prefer to run a body lift, move all the motor/tranny/t case crossmembers forward,or take the old hammer to your firewall?

Send Yukon Jack a PM. He put a big block in his 4x4, he will give you some pointers.
