tailgate order did not go well...

Just got my brand new tailgate from Classic Parts today. What a bummer.

First the tailgate had a nice golf ball sized dent in it. The pics will tell a thousand words.

Then it didn't even fit, AT ALL!!!

The hinge holes were too small. They wouldn't even come close to fitting over my original hinges. The tailgate hinge receptor diameters measure at 1 3/8", and my hinges (factory?) measure at exactly 1 1/2" outside diameter. I really believe I have the correct hinges as my old gate fit great, but you never know, I guess. This was a tri plus blank fleetside tailgate by the way.

Where can I get a real tailgate (or hinges)?

Re: tailgate order did not go well...

I had the same problem from LMC. I got two damaged. They let me keep both for free. I finally got one at a swap meet after searching and searching. I paid half of what a new one costs and it was almost perfect. Keep looking for a original one they come up. May take 10 months but hay....

If I ordered a new gate & it showed like that Id be more than a little upset. Give them a call or email with a pic of the damage & see what they will do to help...

Re: tailgate order did not go well...

I picked one up at the Pate Swap meet saturday. It has a ding in the top rail and was discounted to reflect that. I enjoyed saving about $75, and will address the ding with some mods I'm doing anyway. Glad I didn't mail order mine, after reading all the horror stories on here.

Re: tailgate order did not go well...

I got a Goodmark/Tri-Plus a few years ago. It arrived in good condition, but the plain gates (no letters) are junk. I swear they are thinner than those with the stamped letters. Mine fits so-so, but the first time I went to open it after installing to check fit, it creased where I put my thumb to open the latch. I'm still looking for a good OEM gate.

Re: tailgate order did not go well...

Thanks for the sympathy. So I called Classic Parts and they are sending me another tailgate. I asked if it would come in a better box, and they said that they always ship the tailgates the same way, just wrapped in cardboard. She said the steel is so thick that they never have this problem. Yeah, right...

But I'm happy that they're sending me a new one, and not disputing it. They asked also that I leave the bad tailgate in it's original box on my porch, and they would send UPS to pick it up. That part's cool. I would have hated to deal with it anymore than that.

If the next one comes out bad, I'm going to freak out though.

By the way, if anyone could measure the outside diameter of their hinge that bolts to the bed, I would appreciate it. I'm a little concerned I may not have the right hinges, as this tailgate didn't fit over them.
Thanks in advance.

Re: tailgate order did not go well...

If I remember right, my Goodmark gate came in a super thick cardboard box, but had some wood bracing inside. Something like 1x1's or 2x2's.

Re: tailgate order did not go well...

Mine are 1 9/16" OD. And mine do fit the tailgate I just picked up Saturday. I ran out to the shop and checked after reading your post earlier.

Thanks Psycho,
That's close to what I measured mine at. The bad part is the inside diameter of the hinge receptors for this tailgate was only 1 3/8". They won't slide over my hinges. I wonder if this is part of a bad batch, or is just plain the wrong gate???

Anybody received a blank fleetside tailgate lately? How did the hinges fit?

And Glock- this Classic Parts tailgate did have a 2 X 2 strip on the top and bottom that seemed to strengthen the box pretty well.
