Cheap(er) white walls??

I just got some new rims for my '57 GMC that will accept radials. Does anyone know of a good source for whitewalls that are cheaper than $160 per tire? I'm poor and in college. They're 16 inch rims...

Re: Cheap(er) white walls??

Lots of guys used to just paint them on with a good quality oil based paint like Rustoleum. Never heard of it hurting the tire...

Re: Cheap(er) white walls??

When I was a kid in the late 50's. The fake white walls were a joke. You could tell they were fake a mile away. Anyone trying to be cool wouldn't have them.
The ones now may be better.
One of the big problems was them not staying agenst the tire. There would be a big gap that looked like CRAP.

Re: Cheap(er) white walls??

I bought my tires at Pep Boys, just a plain old raised white letter tire and had them 'buffed' at a local custom shop. The tires were about $60 a piece and the buffing was $15 a piece. It's another 'poorboy' option...

Re: Cheap(er) white walls??

That video was awesome. I' going to get some used white letter or white stripe tires and buff them!

Re: Cheap(er) white walls??

Very cool idea, I ain't gonna do that to mine so they don't steal them. I might make a few bucks from the "rides" I know of with this project. Nice tip BRO.

Re: Cheap(er) white walls??

Well after a summer of driving with the portawalls here are my findings.
The rears have stood up well. Since there is not a lot of weight on the rear tires they do not have a bulge on the bottom to flex the white wall. The fronts are another story. I blew one at about 70 mph on the highway. Made a nice racket in the wheel well but no damage. Also threw the balance out. The extras weight on the front seems to put more of a bulge which in turn flexes the porta wall. I'm still happy with the look and will probably buy a real set for the front and keep the flappers on the rear.
