Stupid 1bbl Carb Question

Does anyone know if there should be a spring or some type of clip or retainer on the needle the goes in the rotary valve where your gas flows in. The needle in mine just sits in there. I have the haynes book for the truck and it doesnt show one being there, but its also not a very good diagram. a friend of mine thought there should be one there. I went down to napa and got a rebuild kit for it, then i got home opened it up and realized the teenager gave me the wrong one. Its a rochester monojet model 7041014. Its on a 1970 250ci. Its not the original carb. Thanks for any help.

That carb number means it is off of a 71 model, get a carb kit for a 71 next time, and you should be fine.

The fuel comes in through the line, into the float bowl, and fills up the float bowl until the float pushes the needle up into the seat. That closes off the fuel flow. I don't know about a rotary valve on that carb There should be/could be a spring behind the fuel filter, is that what you are talking about?

Here is a pic out of a manual that I had handy. This is a 70's vintage manual, so the pretty much knew what was what on these trucks back then
