A death in the family....

My truck finally died. Ive been waiting for it to happen for the longest time. About a year ago it started knocking/smoking. Ive just been masking it with 50wt oil.

Well I was running late for work today, so I had to be a little mean to my truck to make it there in time. I had the 100mph speedo buried, and was rapping about 4800-5000 on the tach.

Then I heard a loud boom...clack-clack-clack....thud...splat.

Atfirst I thought I just hit a dog or a small child or something....I didnt care because I didnt have time to stop. When I slowed down at the stop sign all I saw was smoke barreling out of the hood and smothered the headlights. So I turned down Mudvayne and heard it knocking....LOUD. A quick glace at the guages made everything appear to be normal. Work was less than a mile away and I chanced it. I made it to work just a few minutes late. After entering the parking lot all I could smell/see was smoke. I threw it in neutral, killed it and coasted into the parking spot.

Only costed a case of beer and a few dollars worth of gas and one of my buddies got it home. Popping the hood was kind of suprising at first. Oil blanketed the passenger side of the engine compartment, everything else had oil spots on it. Im gonna drain the oil this weekend to look for chunks of motor or whatever I can find.

Mitch-

****WARNING**** don’t play Mudvayne while driving 100 mph! It will cause your motor to plow up!!

The Grim Reaper got the heart but not the soul. Put a new heart in and the truck will out run him next time.

Re: A death in the family....

My motor in my truck has been doing the same thing for a while. The PO had a dipstick in that was six inches to long and guess where that topped the oil off at. It was only small knocking and at the time didn't have money for a replacement. But it was my DD for a year and now hopefully a different 350 goes in it this weekend.

Maybe I should take it out in Glory and see if it will even hit 100 mph!!!

Hope you have the truck back on the road soon.

Luckily I just scored an 89 3/4T twisted and thrashed 'Burban the other day for only a grand....TBI 454/700R4

Im ripping the drivetrain out and throwing the "Burban in a ditch somewhere. Then tearing apart the 454 and throwing some go-fast parts at it, nothing really mean where as I would still like it to be a realiable daily. I think Im gonna drop the tranny off down here to Marty at Neil Chance Converters to give it a quick run through and some beefing up.

But alas, I got a kid on the way now....so it might get put off longer than I want. But its better than getting rid of it for a family wagon.

Re: A death in the family....

i just got to thinking what people you met on the highway were thinking, when a blurr went by at 100mph follow up by a plume of smoke probably looked like a jet followed by its contrail

good to know you got 454 for it (theres no replacement for displacement)

Re: A death in the family....

Update....

Got the engine pulled....pulled the pan. Nasty oil was gummed up all over the bottom of the pan. I think the guy I got the motor from was using Penzoil unfortuantly.

No metal shavings, but there was big chunks of piston and rings though.....and a rod cap.

Number 7 rod was bent and the piston was like....blown into pieces. I dont know if it happened afterwards or what, but it looks like on of the rod bolts busted and the cap/rod seprated and slammed into the crank (The loud boom I heard) and continued to slap the rod at it spun (the clack-clack-clack I heard)

Anywho..long story short, need new crank/rod/piston and I think the block is scrap. The crooked rod made a REALLY deep gouge into the cylinder. Its already .080 over the old man said, which I think would have put it into the water jacket.

Wish I had a camera at time like these.
