battery cables smoking.........???

I have an old 71, 350 that was sitting for 14 years. In trying to crank it (engine does turn over) the battery cables get hot and start smoking in just a short time.
What could this be?

I would agree with that, its most likely a bad ground. The wires are probably crossed or one of the wires is stripped and grounding out. Hope you get it figured out.

Re: battery cables smoking.........???

It is either the starter drawing too many amps, or a bad ground. Clean the connections at the block end of the ground cable, both ends at the battery. Check and make sure the starter bols are tight. See what happens then.
