Can anyone identify this HEI? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I pulled this off a 69 GMC - it was on a 250 (motor mounts were directly across from each other) - can anyone tell me what it is? It had the coil mounted on the block. The coil had a split in it - is this something I could replace? I'm thinking about putting it on my 72, 250. Thanks all!

Later model HEI, looks just like the one on my 1982 3/4 ton w/250. If the coiil is split its junk. Good change the module is popped too.

ok on the coil - junked - could you elaborate on the "module"? That's not a "toss it in the trash thing" is it?

I've seen that before. I knew a guy who had one of those in a early 70's (Canadian) Pontiac full size. His coil was cracked too but still ran. We had no money so he never fixed it.

The way these work is just like a V8 only the coil is outside. A pickup coil sends a pulse to an electronic module that acts like points, turning current on and off thru the coil to create high voltage at the tower which then feeds the cap and rotor which sends it to the plugs.
The module is in the distributor.
If the coil broke from water getting in it and freezing, well and good. But if it failed and overheated and/or shorted, the module may have seen voltage spikes or high current and popped. They are a simple change, just like a point set.

I've got one of those but haven't installed it.The guy I got it from told me it was from a 75.If you find more info one these please post.I plan on refurbishing it and installing this summer.
