My 87 SWB build. aka:Yyyyeeeeeeessssssssss!

Tommorrow I drop the '87 off at the body shop. Hopefully I'll have good updates now and it's on a 4-month Estmiated finish time.

Oh yeah, N2TRUX, we'll have a little more in common now

Re: Yyyyeeeeeeessssssssss!

Yup, I talked myself into black Jeff. I told them to get the same code as is on my '99 sierra and match them. It'll look SWEET towing down the road with the two of them.

I'm still a bit sad that I had to give up the turbo kit, but in my position money is tight and I had to pick which I'd like more, a running truck or a turbo kit in pieces. I'm dropping the bed off tommorrow so they can start there, they're estimating 4 months on the job to finish. I chose a price that I'd go for last night, when I called today they hit that price dead on the money, it was meant to be...

I'll update each weeks WDYGD threads (assuming I get updates that fast), and I've got a build thread started on gmfullsize.com now also.

I'm like a kid in a candystore right now!

Re: Yyyyeeeeeeessssssssss!

Sweet! Will you be installing the engine/trans prior to bringing it in for paint, or attempt to install them afterwards?

Any special body mods in mind? I know your firewall is shaved, but what else have yo done or do you have planned?

The only body modifications are shaved mirrors, 2" steel cowl hood, shaved drip rails, and shaved tailgate.

I really want this to look almost stock (with a few exceptions of course), so the shaving is very minimal.

It will get a blazer style chrome rear bumper, 88-91 GMC grille with billet insert, stock front bumper, and that's about all.

Keeping the stock door handles and stock park lights in the front fenders.

Well, I sure hope to have it finished, and it won't be as nice as yours, so yeah, that pretty much leaves the color!

Take a look at the link posted above, theres a thread about it with pictures.

I dropped the Bed and frame off. Being that it's got those damn reproduction bedsides they wanted the bed first to start on it. Updates will start flowing in as I get them now

Re: Yyyyeeeeeeessssssssss!

Well, I went down to pull the steel braided lines and drivetrain off the frame, just so they didn't have to worry about them while painting and doing body work. I was pleasantly suprised to see that they had already started sanding on the bed to get a good idea of where they were at to begin with. I'm too used to the junk sitting for 2 months before they even look at it.

I have to go get the good wheels/tires off of it this week sometime, I'll take the camera and snap some photos for you guys.

Re: Yyyyeeeeeeessssssssss!

well, they've made good progress considering there's ONE guy that does all the work in the shop. I stopped by after work today, only had my camera phone

BAD NEWS: NEVER buy bedsides from LMC, or any NON OEM manufacture for that matter, just bad news. In order to get these straight they're having to skim them and work them down as far as possible. Nothing more they can do I am confident that it should hold up fine though, hell, if Boyd Coddington can get away with it, I can too.

Anyhow, I'm just tickled pink to see progress... They tore the bed all down and are working the sides before re-assembly. If anyone didn't know before, the bed was just bolted up loose and NOT square, so there was no harm done in tearing it back down...

finally, this is another one they're doing right now, also black. He said it is going to be nothing compared to mine though. Just a stock color repaint.

I'll have more updates in about a week

That other truck, looks like the rear wheels don't sit quite in the middle of the fenders, like the axle was moved forward 2-3" - weird!

Re: Yyyyeeeeeeessssssssss!

Ivan, the bed is just siting there more than likely, look at the gap between it and the cab.

Steven, progress is awesome isn't it!? Looks great so far. As far as non-GM sheet metal...I will never use it! Sure, GM metal often cost more, but it is much better in fit and quality...and makes me feel beter knowing my truck is all GM.

Not rubbin it in, I have been in your shoes plenty of times...did you ever hear about my Unlimited cowl hood that I HAD to have? I am now back to a GM flat hood...

BTW, I'd lose that trans crossmember and get a factory double hump or make one of your own, will make routing your exhaust easier and will look better too.

Man, what I would only give for it to be my hood instead of my bedsides... LOL

I don't know what I'll do about the crossmember yet. I still have to weld a Driveshaft loop in, so I'll deal with it then I suppose...

Re: Yyyyeeeeeeessssssssss!

Been in hiding for a while...

Here's a few updated pics. Work was delayed for a while, as I had my '99 in there for a while, and we also had the 63 impala in there for a while for work, I told them to push my truck aside and make those a priority. Now all of the parts are with them and they are full steam ahead again.

Inner fenders are about worked out:

Starting to go back together with bed:

I'm excited to see this color everywhere :

No area is left untouched :
