Ram Air setup, pics please?

I am finishing up my truck this month, will post pics when complete.

I am adding a ram air setup.

I want to pick up the air right at the grill.

Thinking of this grill mod to allow space for the pickup hoses. I remember in high school we used to collect the air by dumping the inside headlights [4 light systems] and picking up the air through the second headlight housing

How are you picking up your cold air for your ram air setups? What are you using for the ends?

you could run hoses to pick up the air underneath the bumper, or cut holes in the rad support and run the hoses from the grill, through the support and to the aircleaner

Keep in mind that you don't necessarly need a round hole to pick up the forced through the rad suppot. Had a porsche that picked up air from oval scoups mounted on the top of the rad support --between it and the hood--and routed the cool air back on both sides of the V8 to inlet at the rear of the block at the firewall. (928S4)--it also had air inlets that forced air directly to the front disc's for cooling. Both GM and Ford had dual intake air cleaners for easy hookup. using a GMC firewall would give you the dual hole but ----headlight placement might be an issue. Definitely a nice upgrade that many will watch to see you solution. Huck

Here is the setup I am using for the ram air- still looking for ideas about the actual pick-up collectors. Something a little larger, maybe?

i am thinking about attaching a hose to the firewall so that i can draw in the air from the windshield.... Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

There doesn't seem to be much actual measured data- everyone just says 'substantial boost' in HP. A pilot friend says that you have to be going more than 100 mph for any gain from the ram effect. Most everyone agrees that the additional cold air can't hurt

71STPSDE, what does it look like going through the core support, and what is on the other side of the core support that is actually collecting the air into the tubes? Your setup looks almost identical to what I want to do- gather up the cold air [or at least colder than in the engine compartment], run it through the core support and then dump it into the air box. I want to use rectangular pickups outside the core support that will stand up and down in the new space outside the inner and outer grill so they show from the front of the truck. Couple more pics, please?

That's what I was thinking. I can see a bigger gain on newer cars from opening up a closed air filter box but not so much on one of our trucks. Let me know how it works out though, I'd consider it for mine.

I'm out of state right know. From what I can remember, on the other side of the core support, is the back of the grill. Sorry I can't help right know. Hopefully end of this month.

For my k5, i was thinking of using a ram air setup. I was just gonna cut up an old hood and put a mustang-style scoop.



I am interested in who makes that dual snorkle setup, looks like it sits on a 360 degree filter. If someone got me a brand name it would be appreciated. Thanks

Something to keep in mind is all the ridges on the hose actually causes turbulance in the air and in some instances hurt performance, so I've been told. Would be nice for a nice smooth hose though.

I got my setup from Summit, Jegs sells a kit, too. Google Ram Air Box and settle down to read for a while

The engineers say the turbulence is eliminated by the heavy filter, which also is supposed to trap water when it rains. We will see.........

Got the core support cut, ran the hoses from the grill, through the support and then up to the dual pickups on the air box.
Gonna just leave it like that until I get it road-worthy again, next weekend.
I think I'm gonna search around a little more for a larger, funnel-shaped pickup at the grill. I am not happy with the size of the collector ends and want a little more flow. My mechanic says it is a total waste to spend all this money on a bib block and then quiet down the sounds of the engine suckin' air. He wants the air scoops in the glove box so you can hear 'em
I had a cover built for my gas tank filler by a sheet metal/furnace guy. I may ask him to build me something I can live with if nothing else works.

WinDancer go back and look at this http://www.ramairbox.com/snorkels.html. The round metal inlets (4/5/6FLC) could probably be picked up at a hardware store or some place that does duct work for less than what ramairbox wants for them.
