Re: 70 chevy stepside

You guys think this front axle is a 10 bolt corp? I looked and looked for a dana 44 and I thought this one was a dana. I might be wrong - how does one tell? The identication tags are gone and its out of a 86 suburban.

Thanks for the input.

Re: 70 chevy stepside

Here is some data that I have collected, I am putting an 82 Corp10 in my 68 K-10. I believe that Dana44's stopped in 1977-1979'ish in Chevy's. Looks good under there though... I was going for a Dana as well but the correct gear ratio and $$ changed my mind.

Re: 70 chevy stepside

1969k10stepside,

My axle is a dana 44 as per your pic - my picture is not real clear and it dark here so ill send over a pic in the morning. I tried to expand the pic to show you guys but its to big to upload.

O'l Buck - go for it. Ive gotten many compliments about the truck the last two days.

Thanks agian for the advice it really helped.

Re: 70 chevy stepside

A way to tell if its a 44 or not is by looking on the axle housing by the diff cover.
It should say "44" if it is a 44.It kind of looks like a Corp 10 bolt from the current pic though.
Look at the pic below, where I circled it in black,a "44" should be on the housing
Feel free to email me pics and I will post them if you are having trouble

D44s (and other dana axles) do NOT always have the number there.

I can tell it's a 10 bolt because of the ears on the bottom of the diff, which a D44 does not have- I was able to discern this from your first pic. Also, from the factory in '86 it would have been a 10 bolt- we know GM liked to use whatever was on the shelf, but 1977-1980 was the phase in/out period for the two.

So in summary; it's a 10 bolt, but they are almost identical to the D44. And it still is a nice truck

Re: 70 chevy stepside

wpvtx, do you know about any 4x4 clubs or trails around? I'm in Sleepy Eye, it's all farms and prairie here.

Anyone, Is there a web site that indexes area clubs or trail areas?

HG

BTW, like the truck. If you plan on really wheeling this rig I'd probably make some sturdy bumpers.
